This is a virtual position handling complex and high-exposure cases throughout California, handling in-person appearances and trials as required. Candidates located in the Los Angeles area preferred. Job Summary Responsible for competent, ethical and diligent representation of clients in high complexity/exposure cases (in general these cases will involve injuries and damages with a value in excess of $1,000,000); and may assist in the handling of cases assigned to other attorneys. Also, participates in mentoring and training of colleagues and claims partners, and special assignments. May assist in the handling of cases assigned to other attorneys and/or the assumption of cases in the late stages of litigation. Cases may involve all areas of insurance litigation including personal injury, workers’ compensation, subrogation, and personal injury protection.Essential Job FunctionsClient Representation:
Handle all aspects of defending an inventory of cases from assignment to conclusion Handle all aspects of client relationships; initial client contact, keeping client informed of case status, evaluation and strategy throughout case Provide advice, guidance, opinions and/or recommendations to clients on liability, damages and case value Draft legal documents (pleadings, written discovery, motions, briefs) Prepare for and conduct litigation events (hearings, depositions, mediations, arbitrations, settlement conferences, trials and appeals)Case Management:
Manage a complete inventory of cases and effectively prioritize work on all cases Identify potential defenses and strategies to defend clients/case Conduct legal research, investigation, discovery and analysis of relevant facts, file materials, case law and statutes Identify, retain, and consult with experts Prepare clients, witnesses, and experts for depositions, arbitrations, and trials Maintain computerized case diary system/litigation support systems to meet deadlines and reporting guidelines Review documents, records, and other evidence (medical and employment records, claims files, business records, medical reports and evaluations) to analyze and support recommendations, evaluations, and strategy on casesCommunication:
Provide effective and timely communications to clients and claims partners to keep them informed about the status, strategy, and evaluation of each case Keep supervisor informed of work being performed for clients and of any and all problems encountered; Professionally communicate with clients, the court, witnesses, co-counsel, opposing counsel, and co-workers Maintain confidentiality and adhere to company policies, guidelines, practices and procedures Performs other duties as assigned. Physical Actions This role, whether performed virtually or in an office setting, will include normal and customary distractions, noise, and interruptions. Sits or stands for extended periods of time, up to a full work shift. Occasionally reaches overhead and below the knees, including bending, twisting, pulling, and stooping. Occasionally moves, lifts, carries, and places objects and supplies weighing 0-10 pounds without assistance. Listens to, interprets, and differentiates auditory information (example others speaking) at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Visually verifies and reads information. Visually locates material, resources and other objects. Ability to continuously operate a computer for extended periods of time, up to a full work shift. Physical dexterity sufficient to use hands, arms, and shoulders repetitively to operate keyboard and other office equipment up to a full work shift.Physical Environment Required job duties are normally performed in a climate- controlled office environment with exposure to uncontrolled outside environmental conditions as required by the exigencies of the issues or subject matter. High Exposure Attorneys are expected to handle any matter assigned within their State of licensure and Courts of Admittance, which may require travel by vehicle, train, or air with extended overnight and/or lengthier travel periods.Education Requirements Juris Doctor required, law school degree from a State or American Bar Association accredited law school, and member in good standing of the State Bar in the state in which the position is located. Other: Member in good standing of the State Bar in which the position is located Upon Hire *^.Experience Requirements Minimum of 10 years demonstrated experience in high exposure and complex litigation matters*Minimum five years experience handling larger exposure matters. Must have the requisite background, knowledge and skill set to handle high exposure multi-party litigation, high profile litigation, cases involving inadequate policy limits, reservation of rights, property rights, as well cases with uncommon and/or unique legal theories or causes of action. Minimum of 20 trials to verdict or equivalent conclusion, with at least 15 of those trials serving as 1st chair with significant complexity and catastrophic injury and/or damages*25 direct examinations/cross examinations at trial of medical and technical experts*2 years working in the insurance industry or with insurance claims*^.Special Skill Requirement Expansive knowledge of both procedural and substantive law. Superlative skills in all areas including, but not limited to, trial, public speaking and/or communication, case preparation, strategy, advocacy, negotiations, depositions, expert witnesses, damages, ana lysis/evaluation, reporting and client/customer service.Benefits
