HIGH VOLTAGE ELECTRICAL WORKER HELPER
Summary You will serve as a HIGH VOLTAGE ELECTRICAL WORKER HELPER in the Operations Officer, Public Works Office/Deputy Public Works Officer Norfolk, Production Division, Utilities and Energy Ship to Shore Electrical of NAVFAC ENGINEERING CMD MID-ATLANTIC. Responsibilities You will perform work following safety procedures and wearing proper personnel protective equipment. You will assist in maintenance and repairs of shore power cables and connectors You will assist in the connecting and disconnecting of shore power cables You will assist in the moving and lay out of shore power cables on the pier. You will assist in moving cables to/from storage. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. The Screen-out Element for this position is: 1) Understanding of electrical systems, along with troubleshooting skills and familiarity with necessary tools and equipment, 2) Understanding of electrical and electronic theory, 3) Troubleshooting and resolving technical issues, 4) Performing physically demanding tasks, including lifting and carrying, in various outdoor weather conditions. Education Additional Information This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program. PHYSICAL EFFORT: Requires hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity to adjust, control and maintain equipment. Requires auditory acuity to detect noises indicative of defective functioning equipment. Requires color discrimination to distinguish color coded electric circuits. Required to lift and carry heavy weights of 40 pounds and over with assistance when lifting and carrying material. WORKING CONDITION: The incumbent is exposed to elevations, high voltages conductors, and open unprotected switchgear with voltages ranging up to 34,500 volts. These hazards may result in cuts, shock, broken bones, or loss oflife. Works outdoors in all weather conditions 60% of the time supplying power to ships and on electric distribution systems. Works indoors 40% of the time assembling cam-locks on cables and plugs, and other shop work. Such uncomfortable conditions exist as excessive heat and cold weather conditions as well as dust, dirt, noise, poor illumination, unpleasant odors, and dampness. Subject to "emergency callbacks" on short notice during hurricanes, storms, and other emergency conditions. Required to perform some tasks on overtime and odd hours. A 40 hour work week is typical of this position. This position has promotion potential to the 8 grade.
