Responsibilities
Accurately orients tissue in paraffin blocks and produces high quality slidesResponsible for processing, cutting, and staining tissue specimensPerforms special stains as requiredMaintains necessary files of slides and paraffin blocks while maintaining absolute certainty of identification of each specimen, block, and slide throughout processing and storageResponsible for the maintaining of all specimens and records for the time designated by all regulating bodiesPerforms and assists with frozen sectionsAssists pathologist with bone marrow biopsiesProperly compares and verifies patient identification data on specimens and requisitionsMaintains surgical specimen dataProcesses both gyn and non-gyn cytology specimens when neededPerforms cytoprepatory duties as neededMonitors instrumentation for daily quality control and preventative maintenanceReviews and maintains quality control and preventative maintenance records, reviews and updates procedure manuals, inventories histology supplies, and evaluates new tests and proceduresComplete understanding of the Pathology Information System, including how reports are filed, printed and organizedResponsible for assuring section meets all regulatory requirements (JCAHO, CLIA, etc.)Refers problems to the Pathologists or Laboratory Director as neededOther duties as required
Qualifications
Minimum of a High School Diploma, or equivalent required. Associate's Degree preferredMinimum of two (2) years of related histology experience in an acute care hospital laboratory setting requiredAmerican Society for Clinical Pathology Histotechnician HT(ASCP) or Histotechnologist or HTL(ASCP) certification preferred
