Histology Technician 3-Full Time (Nights)

The Histology Technician 3 orients and embeds pathology specimens to ensure optimal sectioning. Performs all clerical and computer tasks necessary to support department quality operations and performs routine/special staining procedures/cover-slips and appropriately labeling slides and reviewing stain quality microscopically. Prioritizes testing procedures and completing those procedures in an accurate and timely manner while maintaining proper accurate records of all tests done in accordance with established policies, procedures and regulations. Communicates to maintain team knowledge, demonstrate knowledge of regulatory standards in order to satisfy compliance requirements and participate in professional growth opportunities to enhance personal, team and department development.

Requirements for consideration:

Minimum Education:

Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnician program within the last five years prior to the date of application for examination. OR 60 semester hours of academic credit from an accredited university with a combination of 12 semester hours in biology and chemistry, which may be obtained within, or in addition to, the associate degree

Years of Experience:

4 years of experience required

Certification:

Histotechnician (HT); Histotechnologist (HTL ASCP) certification 

Job Responsibilities

Embeds 45 – 50 quality cassettes per hour. Resolves problems and/or communicates unresolved problems to the staff/management. Maintains optimal technical quality in the preparation of specimens for cell blocks and staining of slides. Successfully completes specific job related continuing education units, annually, outside of mandatory HealthStream courses.. Demonstrates depth and breadth of knowledge with expertise in routine embedding and embedding difficult/tiny tissue orientation. Organizes periodic quality assurance materials for pathology peer review, in a timely manner, according to established procedures. Communicates STAT cases/discrepancies and assists with continuous workflow by providing work to the table to be cut and per standard operating procedures. Correctly positions blocks in the microtome and rough face to the appropriate depth to ensure the section on the slide is of the entire tissue surface. May perform additional duties as assigned.
