This job receives and accessions surgical, biopsy, and autopsy specimens for routine tissue processing and subsequent microscopic examination. Assists Pathologists and Residents in the gross dissection room. Routinely embeds tissues in paraffin, cuts, stains and labels slides, and performs special procedures such as special stains, plastic procedures, undecalcified bone processing, and photography of gross specimens.

Education

Required – High school diploma or equivalent

Certifications

Required – HT (ASCP) registration

Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

Interpersonal skills to deal courteously and effectively with patients, physicians, nurses, and other personnel. Judgmental skills in order to identify and solve problems, prioritize work, and handle difficult situations. Analytical skills in order to perform calculations and operate computers, printers, and laboratory equipment such as microtomes, cryostats, automated slides stainers, and coverslipper. Experience managing stress in order to maintain a professional atmosphere and provide quality, accurate results and service to clients. Experience working independently. Must have computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of patient information. Must be proficient with Windows-style applications and keyboard. Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individuals.

Job Duties

Performs routine and specialized lab procedures. Maintains regulatory compliance and performance improvement. Processes orders and prioritizes duties to maintain workflow. Performs quality control and preventative maintenance/troubleshooting. Maintains competency, meeting goals and objectives. Adapts behavior to the specific patient population, including but not limited to: respect for privacy, method of introduction to the patient, adapting explanation of services or procedures to be performed, requesting permissions and communication style Other related duties as required.
