The Pathology Department at the University of Miami in Coral Gables has an exciting opportunity for a  Histotechnologist 3.

SUMMARY          

The Histotechnologist 3 (H) performs as a laboratory professional who prepares tissues from surgical specimens for histology, electron microscopy, and immunohistochemistry. The incumbent utilizes laboratory and hospital systems to accession data and perform other appropriate system functions.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS                                                                                                          

1.    Prepares tissue specimens for microscopic examinations and handles the more complex jobs involving immunohistochemistry for clinical patient diagnosis.
2.    Maintains and reviews quality control in assigned laboratory facilities.
3.    Determines the acceptability of testing results and instrument function.
4.    Maintains all equipment and places orders for reagents and materials.
5.    Maintains records of samples including sample accessioning and paraffin block and slide files.
6.    Follows specimen handling and processing procedures.
7.    Participates in the formulation and revision of departmental policies and procedures.  
8.    Provides guidance and leadership to employees within assigned section.
9.    Makes recommendations for improvement of laboratory functions.
10.    Handles clinical and patient concerns in a confidential manner employing integrity and discretion.
11.    Identifies and resolves problems with equipment and specimen integrity.
12.    Examines slides under microscope to ensure tissue preparation meets laboratory requirements.
13.    Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS                                                                                                         

Education:

Associate’s degree in relevant field

Certification and Licensing:

Florida License for Histotechnology.

Experience:

Minimum 5 years of relevant experience

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.

Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.

Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.

Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.

DEPARTMENT ADDENDUM

Department Specific Functions

Grossing/Histotech is responsible for the preparation of surgical specimens for Histologic processing.

The grosser will record by dictating trough a Dictaphone transcribed by Keystrokes, all measurements, volume, color, etc. as well as specifying how many cassettes were used for each part of case.

Always procuring QA, by inspecting and confirming two patient identifiers.

Describe gross anatomic features of routine, uncomplicated surgical specimens, ensuring that all lesions, markings, and sutures are mentioned.  

Capable of grossing simple to moderate complex specimens under direct and indirect supervision, as applicable to training and experience.

Demonstrated ability to handle broader range of specimens with indirect supervision (i.e., gall bladders, oriented skin lesions, etc.).

Escalates non-routine, complicated surgical specimens to Pathologist Assistants. 

Record measurements, weight, volume, and any abnormal findings as applicable.

Dissect surgical specimens and prepare tissues for histologic processing.  

May be trained to perform basic Histology functions (i.e., embedding, microtomy, routine and special stains and frozen sectioning) if personnel meet all requirements as outlined in corporate
