Work Shift:

Position Overview:

Prepares for all phases of routine surgical pathology specimens for microscopic diagnosis, including processing, embedding, microtomy, H&E staining and frozen sectioning and simple tissue grossing.Determines the adequacy of routine and special stains including immunohistochemical stains according to departmental protocols.Receives, accessions and prepares cytopathology specimens for processing.Participates in continuing education, in-services and departmental programs as required.Performs a variety of special histochemical and immunohistochemical stains according to departmental protocol.Keeps manual and/or computerized records accurate and current for quality control and equipment maintenance. Performs routine maintenance on equipment as recommended by the manufacturer. Troubleshoots problems independently. Advises supervisor timely of equipment problems.Performs appropriate procedures accurately and completely following established infection control practices and adhering to established standards and practices for quality assurance.Follows departmental policies and procedures in accordance with established laboratory practice and policy, regulatory guidelines, performance standards, quality assurance and staff practices.Advises supervisor of supply needs and reagents out-dates. Performs departmental inventory as required. Orders supplies as required. Instructs and provides technical guidance to Histology Assistant as required. Assumes supervisory duties when required. Performs other duties as assigned.Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTSEducation: Associate’s degree required. Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, laboratory, or related field preferred. American Society for Clinical Pathology Histotechnican or Histotechnologist (HT (ASCP) or HTL (ASCP)) certification required or within one year of employment.Experience: One year experience as a Histotechnologist in a clinical setting preferred. 10 years of experience in histology required in lieu of Bachelor’s degree.Knowledge and Skills: Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.Special Training: Familiarity with personal computers. Some training in histology.Mental, Behavioral and Emotional Abilities: Possesses strong attention to detail. Has ability to prioritize tasks.Usual Work Day: 8 Hours
