Histotechnologist

As a Histotechnician, you play a vital role in unraveling the mysteries of the human body preparing slides for microscopic evaluation by pathologist(s) and assisting in the diagnosis and treatment of illness and disease. Processing tissue specimens, you log, batch, sort, cut, mount, and stain for surgical, diagnostic or autopsy cases. Responsible for other tasks such as quality control, instrument maintenance, tissue sectioning, reagent preparation, and tissue fixation procedures, your behind-the-scenes contributions are the foundation of medical diagnoses.

Your Everyday 

Coordinate daily workflow of tasks and activities in the surgical pathology area with regard to routine procedures, special procedures, and the surgery schedule. 

Prepare routine and non-routine slides for microscopic evaluation by pathologists. 

Process specimens delivered from various departments when delivered to the laboratory.  

Sort specimens according to priority and difficulty of procedures and embed specimens into blocks and fixes tissue in formalin.  

Embed and perform microtomy of embedded tissues and ensure appropriate accessioning, labeling and processing of all tissue samples. 

Operate instrumentation for tissue dehydration, section clearing, impregnation with paraffin, cutting tissue sections, and staining of slides. 

Prepare solutions, stains (routine, special or IHC), and reagents in accordance with standard written procedures. 

Assist the pathologist in gross examination of surgical specimens and in frozen/cryostat section procedures. 

Operate and maintain all histology area lab equipment in proper state of readiness and cleanliness, maintain documentation of all specimen and instrumentation quality control. 

Process and ship specimens to referral laboratories. 

Assess the need for radiology, schedule appointments, and coordinate patient transport as needed. 

Set-up all equipment and gather supplies needed for the specimen collection and procedure. 

Assist with dissection, obtain the weight and measurements of the patient and specimen collected, and place specimen for retention in fixative solutions. 

Perform tasks such as sewing the body and organs post procedure, cleaning the patient and patient movement and transport. Releases the patient to the funeral home/coroner’s office. 

Participate in the maintenance of adequate inventory of supplies and reagents 

Comply with hospital/laboratory safety and infection control and report safety incidents to the supervisor. 

Follow standard precautions at all times when dealing with blood and body fluids. 

 
The Must-Haves 
 
Minimum: 
 

Associate degree from an accredited college or university, and/or fulfillment of the educational requirements necessary for qualification to sit for a Histotechnology National Certification Examination   
OR 

High school diploma and a minimum of one-year training under the direction of a registered Histotechnologist.   

2 years of experience in histology/anatomic pathology processes and cutting, embedding and autopsy support.
