Key Responsibilities:

HDD Locator Setup & Operation:

Operate and maintain HDD locating equipment to track the horizontal drilling process during the installation of telecommunications infrastructure. Ensure accurate bore path location by utilizing guidance systems to direct the drill to the correct position, depth, and alignment. Monitor and adjust drilling parameters as necessary to maintain the proper location and avoid obstacles. Verify alignment of bore holes by using GPS systems, tracking systems, and other surveying tools. Perform quality checks to ensure that the drill stays on course, minimizing errors and rework.

Site Preparation & Safety:

Conduct pre-operation checks on HDD equipment and tools to ensure they are in good working condition. Set up safety barriers, signage, and other necessary controls to secure the work zone and protect workers and the public. Work closely with the drill rig operator to ensure proper alignment and operation of drilling equipment. Monitor drilling operations, identifying any potential safety hazards or operational issues, and take immediate corrective actions. Comply with all safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and following industry safety standards.

Coordination & Communication:

Collaborate with the project manager, foreman, and other team members to ensure drilling operations are aligned with the overall project schedule and requirements. Maintain effective communication with the drilling crew, reporting any issues or adjustments needed during the drilling process. Coordinate with utility companies, engineers, and other stakeholders to avoid conflicts with other underground utilities. Provide regular progress updates to the project manager and ensure that all drilling activities are documented properly.

Troubleshooting & Problem-Solving:

Identify and troubleshoot issues that arise during the HDD process, including problems with alignment, equipment failure, or unexpected underground obstacles. Take appropriate measures to adjust the drill’s path or direction to resolve issues and prevent project delays. Work with the team to implement solutions to keep the drilling process on schedule.

Post-Operation & Reporting:

After the completion of the drilling operation, assess and report on the results, ensuring that the project meets specifications. Provide as-built drawings and accurate documentation of bore paths, including GPS coordinates and other relevant data. Assist in the removal and cleaning of equipment at the end of each shift or project. Submit daily reports to the project manager on the status of drilling operations, any issues encountered, and the final results.

Qualifications:

Education: High school diploma or GED required. Experience: Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in Horizontal Directional Drilling operations, with at least 1 year in a locator role. Experience in telecommunications or utility construction is highly preferred. Familiarity with various HDD locating equipment, including electromagnetic locators and GPS systems. Skills: Strong knowledge of HDD systems, equipment, and operation procedures. Ability to read and interpret maps, project specifications, and construction drawings. Proficient in using locators, GPS, and other tracking equipment. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot issues quickly. Excellent communication skills and ability to work well with a team. Certifications: Certification in Horizontal Directional Drilling or related field is preferred. Valid driver’s license required. Physical Requirements: Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions. Ability to stand for long periods and work in physically demanding environments. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and perform manual tasks when necessary. Ability to work safely around heavy machinery and equipment.
