Job Description

The spiritual care department is continuing to change and grow. As we receive more requests and consults, we are looking to expand our team and to expand our hours of on-site coverage.  This is a unique time where the team is shaping what spiritual care looks like and what it can be. It’s a time of huge need and huge opportunity to care for our community in customized, compassionate ways. This role will also including serving the greater hospital community when covering the on-call pager. 

Responsibilities of being a Chaplain at Tufts Medical Center

Assess and integrate sources of meaning, strength, and comfort for patients, loved ones, and staffProvide emotional and spiritual support to patients, loved ones, and staffGuide the hospital community in ritualizing, memorializing, and markingBe an ambassador for and nurturer of love, kindness, and attention for the hospital communityDocument all patient visitsIntegrate as a regular member of the team on assigned unitsServe as a resource to the whole hospital when on-callParticipate in family meetings when appropriateCollaborate across departments to meet community needs as they ariseContribute to the on-call schedule as needs ariseListen and respond compassionately to patients, families, and staff in threatening and stressful circumstances

Minimum Requirements for all Staff Chaplain positions at Tufts:

Completion of a Master of Divinity degree or equivalent degreeCompletion of a CPE residency/4 units of CPETwo years of progressively more responsible experience in hospital pastoral care in order to deal with issues related to a seriously ill patient population.Board certification in a professional chaplaincy organization or commitment to obtaining board certificationAdvanced interpersonal skills necessary to care for a diverse patient/family community and to work beside a large interdisciplinary team in an ever-changing environment

JOB KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS 

Possesses and applies the skills and knowledge necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span, with consideration of aging process, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.   

The ability to listen and respond creatively, hopefully and compassionately to patients, families and staff in threatening and stressful circumstances.  The ability to translate medical information into understandable choices for patients and their families.   Possesses basic understanding of medical terminology and a working knowledge of hospital policies and procedures.  The ability to work under stress and to handle information of a highly confidential nature.   Possesses and applies the skills and knowledge necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span, with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process. 

  

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS 

A Chaplain will work in normal office work environment, inpatient and outpatient clinic care areas, with potential accidental exposure to hazardous chemicals, sick patients, bodily substances.  Work will require occasional computer keying.
