Hospital Coding Specialist - 1 FTE (Remote)

JOB SUMMARY:  Assigns codes to in-patient and out-patient visits, based on departmental direction, using ICD-9-CM, ICD-10CM/PCS and CPT nomenclature in an accurate and timely manner, ensuring compliance with all applicable coding guidelines and reimbursement reporting requirements. Reviews DRG and APC methodologies for accurate assignments. Reviews charge codes/CPTs/edits during coding process and verifies accuracy.  Utilizes 3M coding software.  Abstracts codes into HIS system for data retrieval and timely billing.  In addition, abstracts pertinent study information for the peer review program and clinical studies as requested.  Queries physicians for documentation clarification. Monitors un-coded accounts for resolution. Participates in coding validation audits, as assigned.  Works with departments and business office to resolve claim issues and denials.  Maintains quality and productions standards.  Provides education to other departments, as necessary.  Has ability to map ICD-9 codes to ICD-10 codes, as requested. Work with CDI specialist and CDI program.   Other duties as assigned.

 

 

KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE:  Minimum 2 years coding experience in acute care setting highly preferred.  Knowledge of ICD-9-CM, ICD-10 CM/PCS and CPT coding guidelines.  Knowledge of DRGs, MS-DRGs, APR-DRGs, APCs, anatomy and physiology, medical terminology and disease processes.

EDUCATION:  BA, BS or AA in Health Information Management or coding certification required.  ICD-10 training appropriate to credential required.  Experience many be considered in lieu of education. 

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRY:  RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P required.  Other certifications may be reviewed.  Education or certification eligible may be considered.

Possesses interpersonal/communication skills necessary for effective, non-judgmental, and empathetic customer relations. Open to feedback and open to a changing environment, which requires flexibility in scheduling and department assignments.  Ability to focus on details and multi-task.  Ability to examine records and verify patient identification.  Ability to identify provider deficiencies and utilize computer systems to process records.  Good eye and hand coordination.
