Hospital Housekeeping Officer
Summary The position is organizationally located in the Pittsburgh VA Medical Center's (MC) Environmental Management Service (EMS). EMS is an independent service line and the position reports directly to the MC's Deputy Director. The primary purpose of this position is for the administration and management of the overall EMS and its operational services, including all aspects of the EMS operational program for all divisions of the VAPHS. Responsibilities The incumbent is responsible for developing, directing, coordinating and administering an effective and efficient Environmental Management Service program. Participates on the Infection Control Committee and frequently collaborates with the hospital Infection Prevention team. Contracts with private companies to augment in-house staff operations for remote clinics. Responsible for the Cleaning and Disinfection of Non-Critical Reusable equipment/items for patients in Hospital. Develops and directs interior decoration activities to assure such factors as: function of area and environment desired; comfort of beneficiaries, visitors and employee; durability for materials utilized and their ease of maintenance and economy to the Medical Center. Responsible for the Integrated Pest Management Program for the VAMC, to include planning, organizing, directing, controlling and evaluating the effectiveness of the program. Responsible for the planning, controlling and directing of the service to include budget development, staff needs, equipment needs and utilization of all available resources to ensure adequate supplies of linen for the facility operation. Involved in operational impact issues related to remodeling and/or new construction projects at the healthcare system. Oversees the operations of the Textile Care Management Division, which includes consolidated laundry, linen management, uniform management, uniform management and patient assistance program. Ensures EMS staff collaborates with Nursing to ensure the facility's inventory and receipt record will be maintained on valuables accepted for safekeeping. Accountable for directing efforts to meet regulatory goals for reducing solid waste disposal. Work Schedule: 8:00am-4:30pm Telework: This is not a telework position. You may qualify based on your experience as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-12 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Identifies and develops ways to resolve problems or cope with issues that directly affect the accomplishment of principal of principal program goals and objectives. Makes decisions and actions that have a substantial impact on program objectives, goals, funding, scheduling, organizational structure and allocation of resources. Inspects all areas of Medical Center for cleanliness. Manages and monitors contracts with support the EMS programs. Assists in conducting tests and experiments of housekeeping products and equipment which improve the services and effectiveness of Environmental Management Service. In addition, you must possess experience in two or more of the following areas or other work related to the position: Experience that demonstrated a practical working knowledge of the basic principles of chemistry, biology, and bacteriology as applied to environmental sanitation, infection control, and to the choice and use of antimicrobial agents in the disinfection, sanitization, and/or sterilization of surfaces and equipment. Experience in laundry and linen management. Experience in interior design management. Experience that demonstrated a knowledge of waste management, including the requirements relating to hazardous, toxic, and infectious wastes and provisions for their final disposition. Experience that demonstrated a knowledge of pest management, including alternative methods of control and the selection and application of chemicals. Physical Requirements: The work is sedentary although there may be some nominal walking or standing for short periods or carrying light loads of papers, books, or reports that do not require special physical demands. The work is usually performed in an office setting. However, incumbent may be exposed to other environmental settings while performing inspections, attending meetings.
