HPC Group Leader (Research Engineer)
University of Rochester: Office of the Provost: Academic Center: LLE-Laboratory for Laser Energ **Salary Range or Pay Grade** $90,000-$175,000 Annually **Description** University of Rochester’s Laboratory for Laser Energetics seeks group leader for the High Performance Computing (HPC) group. The HPC group provides production HPC systems services to the Laboratory. The work spans from acquisition, development, and production readiness of HPC platforms, to the maintenance and operation of these systems. HPC group also manages file systems, storage, and visualization infrastructure associated with the HPC platforms. The group also conducts research into HPC system software, I/O, and data analytics. LLE currently hosts several supercomputers, including Conesus built by Dell Technology with 384 PowerEdge C6220 nodes and 4th Gen Intel Xeon Platinum 8480 processors and Deluge with 241 dual Intel Xenon Gold 6148 and Platinum 8268 processors. The HPC Group Leader (GL) is a key member and contributor in Theory Division's leadership team. The HPC GL is responsible for supporting the strategic direction for the group, providing oversight on R&D initiatives, working with, and supporting the division's leadership, developing, and maintaining good customer and cross-organizational relations, and promoting a strong safety, security, and ethics culture. **Qualifications** **Minimum Requirements** Leadership + Demonstrated experience managing cross-functional R&D teams consisting of computing scientists, professionals, and technicians providing innovative solutions. + Informing a variety of stakeholders, influence and motivate others, and fostering strong relationships across the Laboratory. + Lead the development and execution of vision, strategic plans, and goals for your group and the Laboratory in general. Technical Excellence + Leadership level knowledge of the following areas exercised in a large scale production computing environment is expected: + HPC computing system administration + NIST SP 800-171 and SP 800-53 compliance + Application of computing and/or infrastructure configuration management at large scales + High performance networking in an HPC setting + Parallel archival storage systems + HPC programming environments + HPC software tools and applications support + HPC systems and environmental monitoring + HPC cyber security + Parallel data archives + Serial and parallel file systems + HPC workload management/scheduling + Data analytics + HPC system software research Business Management + Demonstrated management of more than one of budgets, schedules, performance standards, staffing, hiring, forecasting; mentoring, staff development, succession planning, personnel, and salary management, and ensuring a safe and secure workplace for an organizational unit. + Experience collaborating with more than one of senior management, internal customers, stakeholders, and peer organizations to achieve alignment between institutional priorities and allocation of resources. + Demonstrated ability to work effectively with technical and non-technical staff to set and achieve organizational goals. + Demonstrated experience in effective decision making and creative problem solving. Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 10 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. **Desired Qualifications:** + Advanced knowledge of governmental policies and procedures, particularly those related to personnel management, budget oversight, safety, and security, environment, and community relations. + Experience with large scale simulation of complex physical processes or with the use or deployment of AI software or methodologies. **Application Instructions** Applicants should submit a cover letter addressing how their knowledge, skills and abilities meet the minimum requirements along with a resume. SALARY RANGE: $90,000 to $175,000 The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job.
