HR Generalist

Job Overview:

The Human Resources Generalist is responsible for completing a variety of tasks to support the daily operations of the HR department. Duties include comparing HR laws to current policies and procedures, drafting templates for HR documents, and working with other members of the department to oversee the hiring and onboarding process for company employees.

 

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Oversees and manages the new hire orientation, ensuring the new hire has been properly taken care of before being released to Operations and is the backup for Onboarding in the absence of the Onboarding Specialist. Acts as the Second HR Reviewer for all new hires in accordance with SOX compliance and ensures that the Onboarding Specialist has double saved all new hire documents in HRIS and Egnyte. Handles all Orientation for all positions. Reviews anything considered to be a “red flag” (conflict of interest, SAP, etc.)  regarding new hires, rehires and transfers with HR Supervisor before discussing with Managers. Reviews all background check results for new hires, follows internal guidelines for background checks, and provide recommendation to HR Supervisor. Oversees Quarterly Randoms. Handles all “To Do” tasks in HRIS. Manages and responds to unemployment claims, including representing the company at unemployment hearings. Form professional and cordial working relationships with Operations leaders. Assists with investigations. Works closely with the HR Supervisor to create and support leadership training and development efforts; identify key learning needs and make recommendations. Oversee exit interviews with terminating team members, ensuring that proper documentation is received before proceeding with termination. Educate employees on and enforce company policies and procedures. Engage employees in company culture, values, and recommend updates to policies and procedures when needed. Provide management with requested reports (HR Metrics: headcount, retention, new hires, etc.) Works with HR Supervisor and coordinate events focused on team building, employee recognition and social events to develop company culture to improve overall morale.  Handles employment-related inquiries from applicants, employees, and supervisors, referring complex and/or sensitive matters to the appropriate staff, including escalating to HR Supervisor. Provides guidance to managers/supervisors for disciplinary actions and progressive discipline regarding work performance in accordance with company policies. Attends and participates in employee disciplinary meetings and terminations. Maintains compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommended best practices; reviews policies and practices to maintain compliance.  Maintains knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law.  Works closely with and acts as the backup to the second HR Supervisor in their absence.  Works closely with Communications Recruiting Business Partner and Operations leaders to create up to date job descriptions. Works closely with Compensation department to review pay scales. Works with the benefits team on employees out on FMLA and ADA leave to ensure policy and compliance is being followed.

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to prioritize tasks. Ability to function well in a high, fast-paced, and sometimes stressful environment. Ability to form good working relationships with company staff. Ability to think outside the box. Ability to take ownership of tasks and display initiative. Keen Attention to detail and analytically driven. Detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills Excellent verbal and written communication skills Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines. General knowledge of HR compliance, practices, and procedures Leadership and coaching skills Minimum of 3 years’ experience as a Human Resources Generalist Knowledge in Telecom, pipeline and underground utility operations, a plus Problem solving skills and resourceful thinking. Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software Strong empathy and interpersonal skills
