Your Opportunity
Stantec is seeking an individual to coordinate the implementation of Stantec’s Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE) program within the Environmental Services Business Operating Unit. The position will be based out of one of our larger offices in the US and will report to a Business Line HSSE Manager.
This is a full-time position, and work hours will reflect the requirements of the geography.
Your Key Responsibilities Applies practical knowledge and experience to independently solve HSSE problems related to areas within their operational control. Act as a subject matter expert in a least one of Stantec’s critical risk controls or HSSE related technical discipline. Provides quality review and guidance on deliverables such as reports, communications, and trainings. Work with the HSSE Manager to track and manage incidents, identify effective preventative and corrective actions, and develop and share lessons learned. Identify and lead process improvements in alignment with business or HSSE strategic goals. Provide coaching, advice, and direction to business line on HSSE as it pertains to the services provided by the business. Support operations to effectively use Stantec’s HSSE systems including the HSSE program manual, OHS management system, and safe work practices, as well as local legislation. Provide technical assistance to project teams with pre-job planning and hazard assessments for field activities and the integration of client or geographic HSSE requirements. Conduct field assessments, planned job observations, and worksite inspections independently and with leadership (which may require overnight travel) in support of the Business Operating Unit. Support the subcontractor management program, including coordinating, and conducting contractor prequalification assessments as assigned. Advise staff and leadership on current HSSE industry trends, client specific program requirements, regulatory requirements, Stantec HSSE processes and tools. Ensure the timely completion, documentation and filing of HSSE documents as required. If required, liaise with the Workers’ Compensation Claims Coordinator during injury follow-up discussions and the implementation of Stantec’s ‘Early and Safe Return to Work’ program at a local level. Provide support to integrate Stantec’s HSSE management system with client systems where needed. Assist business leadership and project teams in their response to project RFP’s and RFQs Promote HSSE within the area of responsibility with the goal of continuous improvement of HSSE culture. Support the onboarding of acquired company employees into the business unit. Help identify medical surveillance requirements based on anticipated project exposures. Your Capabilities and Credentials Professional safety certification will be considered an asset. Preferred certifications include: CSP/CRSP, CIH, SME – CMSP, ASP, GSP, OHST or CHST. Experience in HSSE related to field operations is preferred. Maintain required field HSSE courses to work in the relevant sectors. Working knowledge of HSSE regulations in the US. Knowledge of California and Washington State regulations is an asset. Well-developed communication skills, both written and verbal, along with excellent interpersonal, organizational abilities. Capable of delivering, preparing, and presenting to small and large groups. A willingness to work in a team atmosphere or with a minimal amount of supervision. A valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record is required. Demonstrate proficiency with Microsoft Office tools. Requires up to 20% travel. Typically, 2 weeks or less in duration. Physically capable of performing field work; including walking on uneven terrain and able to lift 50-lbs.
Education and Experience
A minimum of 1 years’ experience in a health and safety profession in an advisor role or an equivalent combination of experience and education. Degree in Occupational Health and Safety or related field from recognized university preferred. Experience providing safety support for construction projects is preferred. Periodic field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
