We are looking for a Human Biosamples Operations Lead (HBS Ops Lead) who will be accountable for driving the strategic and tactical delivery of all biosample related activities across the Roche global Product Development portfolio in strong partnership with the PDG Therapeutic Areas (TAs), PDG’s Center of Excellence (COE) community, Translational Medicine and other key partners such as Clinical Science, Quality, Regulatory, etc.
Human Biosamples are a critical component of our drug development ambitions. They provide valuable insights that can lead to advancements in the prevention, detection, and treatment of various diseases. Roche/Genentech use human biosamples and associated clinical data in order to advance our understanding of disease biology and therapeutic response, as well as to fuel the future discovery of novel safe and efficacious treatments for the diseases we focus on. The HBS Operational Lead oversees the End to End Biosample Operations in PDG for all Therapeutic Areas including the strategic planning and execution of biosample collection, data generation, storage, reuse, and destruction within clinical trials, in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
The Opportunity:
In this role, you will translate vision into strategy, guiding PDG in delivering critical biosample data for clinical trials and future research. You will ensure sample integrity, traceability, storage, use, and destruction in alignment with Roche’s One Pharma Strategy. You will oversee biosample operations, proactively mitigating risks and driving continuous process improvements in collaboration with enterprise partners.
Key responsibilities include:
Strategic Leadership & Oversight: Lead biosample operations across PDG, ensuring compliance with bioethics, quality, and international standards. Optimize workflows, integrate new technologies, and evolve processes to support portfolio needs.
Stakeholder Alignment: Act as a key decision-maker, collaborating with PDG Therapeutic Area Leaders, Translational Medicine, Data Science, and Clinical Science to enhance biosample strategy. Partner across Roche, including early R&D, Clinical Science, and Diagnostics, to drive innovation and efficiency.
Enterprise & External Partnerships: Represent PDG in global biosample initiatives, fostering collaborations with external vendors and industry partners to advance biosample collection, testing, and data utilization.
Leadership & People Development: Lead a matrixed team of 150 employees with 8–10 direct reports, fostering an inclusive, high-performance culture. Drive talent development, performance management, and champion Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DE&I).
As a member of PDG’s Portfolio Delivery Leadership team, you will collaborate with key stakeholders to drive biosample innovation and operational excellence in service of patients and Roche’s broader mission.
Who you are:
15+ years pharmaceutical clinical operations experience ideally with differentiated global experience across biosample operations (mandatory), clinical operations (higly valued), portfolio enabling work (systems, processes). People Leadership experience is required and other drug development strategic leadership experience is considered an asset.
Comprehensive understanding of global Pharma human biosample use in drug development and usage in clinical trials and development research.
Strong understanding of global clinical operations including external biosample trends and issues (e.g.,digital biomarkers, IVDR, etc.)
Demonstrated success using analytics and data-driven decision-making in strategy development and execution
Demonstrates strong communication and collaboration skills and quickly builds relationships and trust with stakeholders
Experience in managing a large matrixed organization and a group of direct reports, including other people leaders; Demonstrated ability to lead and work in a dynamic, multi-function environment including effectiveness when working across teams
Proactively seeks to lead and manage individuals and teams to higher performance.
This position can be located in South San Francisco, United States or Basel, Switzerland. Expectation of ongoing and sustained campus presence at the site in compliance with local requirements.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $247,200 - $459,000. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
