Newmont Suriname was established in 2004 as an entity of Newmont Mining Corporation and is headquartered in Paramaribo, Suriname. The Merian Project is located approximately 60 km south of Moengo in a largely undeveloped part of the country with the nearest permanent settlement, Langa Tabiki, approximately 17 km east from the Project site. Strong support from host communities and the government of Suriname strengthen Merian's ability to deliver safe, profitable production with significant upside potential and opportunity for employees, host communities and shareholders.

Dimensions

Total Staff department of 20 employees including the HR Site Manager, Human Resources Superintendent (s), Human Resources Specialist (s), Training Superintendent (s) & Global Mobility Specialist.

Purpose

Responsible for the HR site strategy aligned to the business objectives across all functional areas in Human Resources (Labor relations, Employee Relations, National Personnel Administration, Compensation Administration, Talent Management, L&D, Expat administration) as well as HR policies, procedures and plans for the continuous improvement of people processes.

The cultural, political and regulatory environment adds a level of complexity to the function.

Essential Duties

Provide leadership to develop, implement and manage the Labor Relations Strategy for the company in alignment with the business needs. Develop, implement and control site Human Resources policies and procedures. Implement preventive and corrective actions to ensure compliance. Lead the negotiations strategy with the workers’ union (s) to develop effective collective bargaining agreements in alignment with business needs. Provide advice to the SLT on all country legislation in the areas of employment, labor relations, employee relations and workers compensation. Identify opportunities and potential issues in employee relations acting proactively to prevent or mitigate them. Lead and/or collaborate in employee investigations in partnership with Internal Audit, Legal and Site Compliance as needed. Propose compensation and benefits plans and programs to maintain company market competitiveness in the salary and benefits structure in alignment with regional and country compensation guidelines. Manage Expats administration in accordance with the Corporate’s and Region’s guidelines. Lead the identification, assessment and development of key talent at the site at all different levels, implementing training plans and developmental actions in order to support company’s performance. Identify staffing needs according to business goals, managing the acquisition of talent at all different levels. Sponsor and implement programs to develop local talent. Define, manage and monitor the budget and forecast of the HR department. This also includes overseeing the company budgets related to Talent Development, Training and advising on those associated with the Labor cost of the company.

Training & Experience

B.S. or B.A. is required. Master degree in human resources is preferred. A minimum of 10 years of experience in Human Resources at site, regional or corporate roles (ideally gained at country or in part abroad) Strong presentation, facilitation, and consultation skills. Excellent interpersonal skills. Strong leadership, communication, negotiation and conflict resolution skills. Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills (at least in English but ideally also in Dutch). Strong PC skills using office software such as Excel, Word and Power Point

Working Conditions

It is required to spend at least 50% of its time at the mine site. International travel maybe required based on business needs.

 

During time at site, the occupant of the position must wear personal protective equipment including steel toe shoes, long sleeves, and any other equipment to perform duties safely as determined by the Health and Safety plan.
