The Hershey Company West Hershey plant is a Union plant producing products such as White & Dark Paste, Kisses, Nuggets, Milk Bars, Almond Bars, Rolo & Syrup, in a high-speed complex environment.


Pay: 
 

Starting Pay is $39.11/hour
.75 cent per hour shift differential for working 2nd or 3rd shift
OT Potential!

Summary:
 

The utilities technician is responsible for operating and maintaining equipment needed to supply utilities including electricity, steam, compressed air, chilled water, chilled glycol, and conditioned air to the West Hershey manufacturing facilities.  Maintenance will include repairing, overhauling, adjusting, lubricating, fabricating, modifying, fitting, assembling, improving, and installing a wide range of equipment in the general category of utility operations.  The utility technician will operate with the Q.T.E. principles of customer service, team work, and cooperation with all trades, production, and support personnel. 

Responsibilities and Duties:
 

Follow all safety instructions and procedures (reference JSA).  Particular emphasis is placed on high voltage electricity and ammonia safety.

 

Operate, troubleshoot, and maintain high voltage electrical equipment including 69 kV switch gear and transformers, substations, motor control centers, and auxiliary equipment.

 

Operate, troubleshoot and maintain steam generation and transmission equipment including water treatment, de-aerators, boilers, economizers, condensate systems and auxiliary equipment.

 

Operate, troubleshoot and maintain compressed air systems, perform leak tests.

 

Operate, troubleshoot and maintain chilled water systems including all ammonia equipment, distribution systems, heat exchangers, valves and auxiliary equipment.

 

Operate, troubleshoot and maintain chilled glycol systems including all ammonia equipment, distribution systems, heat exchangers, valves and auxiliary equipment.

 

Troubleshoot and maintain Frozen Cone and Cool Core refrigeration and dehumidification systems.

 

Operate, troubleshoot and maintain all air handling units and the building automation system.

 

Construct and maintain fire suppression systems including draining and refilling, conducting periodic flow checks, control preaction systems, tamper valves, smoke and heat detectors, and water flow sensors.  Act as the primary contact to FM Global for fire system shutdowns.

 

Construct and repair pipe systems for air, water, and glycol including steel pipe and copper tubing.  Must have skills in brazing, gas welding, electric arc welding, oxyacetylene welding, and soldering.

 

Maintain utilities related electrical systems including instrumentation, PLC’s, UPS, conduit and wire ways.  Troubleshoot and modify PLC ladder logic.

 

Maintain the area and equipment in a clean, sanitary, and proper manner.

 

Perform all expectations and duties of the job in accordance with General Plant Rules, Good Manufacturing Practices, HACCP Guidelines, Proper Protective Equipment requirements, OSHA Guidelines, and Q.T.E. principles. 
  Expected to follow the instructions of Team Managers, Team/Shift Coordinators, Working Supervisors, and related personnel. Expected to learn and apply knowledge of existing and new technology as needed to perform the functions of the job. Expected to follow all existing safety rules and policies while performing the functions of the job (lock out/tag out). Expected to communicate with Team Managers, Team/Shift Coordinators, Working Supervisors, Operators, Vendors, and related personnel
  Perform daily job functions with a customer service approach.
  Expected to respond to all calls, pages, directions (verbal or written) in a timely manner. Expected to identify, repair, and communicate equipment issues in a timely manner. Expected to perform the above stated functions independently and when scheduled. Expected to perform the functions of the job in a safe, clean, and sanitary manner.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements: 
 

Must be at least 18 years of age High school diploma or equivalent Must be authorized to work in the United States Must have 5 years’ experience with maintenance of refrigeration and air conditioning equipment with universal EPA license Knowledge of handling of refrigerants and associated equipment Knowledge of the refrigeration cycle
 

Minimum knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform major duties/responsibilities:
 

Proficiency of the English language Works safely and follow all established plant policies and procedures Basic computer skills Understand and use SDS (Safety Data Sheets) Experience with LOTO (Lock Out Tag Out) procedures Must be able to perform basic math calculations Good communication & interpersonal skills Must be available to work weekends, holidays, and overtime Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Must be able to stand, reach, kneel, climb, bend, crawl, and work from high elevations Knowledge of HVAC control systems Knowledge of electrical systems Ability to read construction and electrical control blueprints Knowledge of various piping systems and ability to cut, thread, and solder pipe and tubing Capability to work safely from ladders and scaffolds at various heights
 

Preferred Qualifications:
 

SAP Experience Preferred Food manufacturing experience is preferred Experience with Continuous Improvement methodology is preferred
 

Working Conditions:
 

Work will be performed inside and outside The use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required to include but not limited to safety toe shoes, ear plugs, safety glasses/googles, bump caps, hair and beard nets, and gloves Wearing Company-issued uniforms is a requirement
