HVAC Oprtg Engineer

Summary:
Under general supervision performs duties of monitoring and controlling functions on all heating ventilating and air conditioning systems at Rhode Island Hospital. Inspects repairs and performs scheduled maintenance on all mechanical systems. Assigns work to trains and provides technical assistance to HVAC Mechanics and Apprentices. Responsible for all trade functions for the hospital on weekends and off-shifts.

Responsibilities:
Accepts responsibility for the quantity and quality of work performed and the conduct of subordinates.



Performs the following tasks:



- Operates all mechanical air conditioning and refrigeration systems. Monitors and controls their functions and the discharge temperature humidity and air supply from a central control panel.

- Receives trouble calls or indications of problems from the central panel and assigns a HVAC Mechanic to investigate the equipment malfunction fire drills for the operation of elevators or problems for the entire facility on weekends and off-shifts.

- Takes readings on operating units. Records the condition of operating machinery personnel working the shift work order numbers equipment numbers location of equipment being repaired and part(s) used.

- Utilizes computerized work order system for data entry and equipment analysis. Operates the building management computer system.

- Conducts weekly instructional classes for work group in subject selected from training manual on equipment or procedures e.g. elevator system.

- Leads a small group of HVAC Mechanics and Apprentices including assigning work training counseling providing input on evaluations and initiating disciplinary action when necessary.

- Performs inspections repair and scheduled maintenance on all equipment.

- Maintains proper environmental control of all spaces.

- Maintains and understands repair specifications for HVAC equipment master clock system patient cooling blankets oxygen tents and all new and existing regulatory requirements for the use of CFC refrigerants.

- Responsible for the decisions for hiring trade specialists in the event of an emergency situation. When not on watch the Engineer works with the HVAC Mechanics performs inspections repairs and scheduled maintenance on all equipment.

- Responsible for taking chiller reading on absorption units during cooling season and to make adjustments or repairs to chillers as needed.

- Performs asbestos spot repairs removals and assessments as permitted by certified asbestos competent persons.

Other information:
BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

Requires City of Providence Stationary Operating License or Refrigeration Operators License and the State of Rhode Island Refrigeration Journeyman License.

Ability to install troubleshoot and repair heating ventilation refrigeration air conditioning and related systems within a large hospital complex. 

Knowledge generally acquired through completion of high school and trade school in heating ventilation and refrigeration or equivalent.



Knowledge of soldering brazing welding electronics plumbing electrical mechanical refrigeration air conditioning principles pneumatic controls electrical testing ventilation systems air duct balancing and the ability to read blueprints and schematic drawings.






EXPERIENCE:

Completion of three years accredited Apprenticeship HVAC Program.



WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The physical ability to work in a number of areas climb ladders carry tools lift moderately heavy equipment.
