About the Job:

Illumina Experience Design is seeking an early-career Industrial Designer to join our growing team of product designers as we build best-in-class user experiences across all Illumina hardware and software platforms and touchpoints. You will have the opportunity to participate in the conceptualization and development of new products while addressing manufacturability, aesthetics, physical and human-factors interfaces between users, products and packaging. You will help generate technical design documentation necessary to convey design solutions to internal stakeholders through sketches, renderings, models, mechanical drawings, and written design briefs. You will work closely with other designers, user researchers, engineers, and product managers to translate business objectives and customer needs into stellar experiences while resolving technical and team challenges.

Responsibilities:

Design and generate physical product and packaging design concepts including materials selection, construction, mechanisms, form factor development, color, surface finish, and manufacturing processes in collaboration with cross-functional teams involved in the product development process.Create form studies and prototypes that showcase your advanced skills working with your hands and convey product and packaging design ideas through strong sketching and model making skills.Craft beautiful visuals and design briefs to convey ID solutions to management and other business functions through renderings, models, mechanical drawings, and written reports.Deliver safe, functional, manufacturable, and innovative products while meeting regulatory requirements.Identify complex design problems, anticipate production issues, evaluate options, and develop alternative solutionsCreate and organize all visual designs, written documents and presentations with skill and efficacy for ID project needs.Collaborate closely with other product designers, human factors specialists, user researchers and engineers to create compelling solutions that respond to unmet user needs.Demonstrate and promote the importance of good design and brand values while successfully advocating for the appropriate design solutions across disciplines and stakeholders. Embrace the vision of how things could be in all work activities, while making balanced decisions to support each collaboration.

Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in industrial design or equivalent with 1-3 years of recent and relevant industrial design experience.Ideation skills, design thinking and a solution-based user experience perspective.Excellent hand sketching and form development skills.An understanding of the value of color, materials, and finishes as it applies to product design and experience working with design tools, such as 3D CAD SolidWorks, Keyshot, Adobe Creative Suite.An understanding of the product development process with an ability to communicate well with engineering teams and work well with multi-disciplinary/multi-cultural teams.Experience with DFM, volume manufacturing and late-stage development through product launch and production.Background working in medical device, life science, or healthcare industries is a plus as well as knowledge of the human-centered design process, methodology, design best practices, research experience and digital design capabilities.Demonstrated experience with turning customer insight into engaging designs with great problem solving and communication skills.Must have portfolio that showcases a thoughtful creative process (sketches and models).

The estimated base salary range for the Industrial Designer role based in the United States of America is: $96,500 - $144,700. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable base pay range may be updated accordingly. Compensation decisions are dependent on several factors including, but not limited to, an individual’s qualifications, location where the role is to be performed, internal equity, and alignment with market data. Additionally, all employees are eligible for one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package.
