Industrial Hygienist I
Working/Functional Title Industrial Hygienist I Position Summary MSU Office of Environmental Health & Safety is seeking an Industrial Hygienist for laboratory ventilation, design and air monitoring. This position will provide technical guidance for laboratory renovations, local exhaust ventilation and fume hoods for the University's 2000+ research labs. This position will work closely with the University's Planning Design and Construction group to ensure new buildings and renovated spaces meet local, state and national codes, standards and best practices for laboratory safety. In addition, this position will be the point person in evaluating existing HVAC system performance and provide consultation to tradespersons to correct deficiencies. This position may require travel to off campus facilities in Detroit, Grand Rapids and Flint. Applicants should have at least a BS in a science-oriented major and 1+ years in industrial hygiene and/or HVAC experience. Experience using and referencing the ACGIH Industrial Ventilation Manual, ACGIH TLV book and the MIOSHA air contaminants table is a plus. Successful applicants will have demonstrated experience in working collaboratively with design and construction partners while ensuring safety codes and standards are met. Minimum Requirements Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Industrial Hygiene, Chemistry or Toxicology; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in analytical methods and instrumentation, chemical calculations, gas chromatography, spectroscopy, scintillation counting, industrial hygiene monitoring techniques, the distillation and handling of hazardous materials and knowledge of Federal and State health/safety regulations; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Additional Qualifications A strong background and understanding of chemistry. Desired Qualifications Applicants should have at least a BS in a science-oriented major industrial hygiene and/or HVAC experience. Work experience in industrial hygiene, which may include work in conducting site audits for compliance with written occupational safety and health programs, recommending and assuring implementation of PPE and controls, or developing and/or performing training to Level II workers.
