General Summary Statement Involves active participation in various functions of the Infection Prevention Department including the identification and monitoring of infectious diseases in the hospital and ancillary departments. Work to further efforts to reduce the risk of infection to patients, staff, and visitors. Essential Duties and Responsibilities •Understand and/or effectively research the microbiology, pathology and progression of illnesses as they occur in hospitals and healthcare settings. Conducts surveillance: standardized basic investigation methodology utilizing NHSN definitions to research potentials Hospital Acquired Infections (HAIs.) This will involve patient chart review, following microbiology reports, discussing with direct care clinicians as well as clinical leadership. Shares data and trends with all departments. •NHSN administration and data entering. Work effectively as part of many expert teams. This includes the ability to cooperate, coordinate and communicate with all members of the Infection Control department, as well as many other departments and disciplines. Examples include Physical Plant and outside construction contractors, Laboratory Medicine, Nursing, hospital Quality and Safety experts, physicians (internal and outside), other hospitals and healthcare entities. Support teams by supplying accurate infection data. •Infection Prevention oversight of hospital construction projects. Monitors inpatient, ambulatory or procedural areas. Visibly present with these units to provide infection control leadership and support. Within inpatient units, this should include participation, infection prevention environmental rounding and medical device rounding. Communicate and understand the ethics, often complex, surrounding infection control decisions, patient and employee safety and healthcare as outlined in the APIC professional and practice standards. •Utilize several electronic data and charting systems including Sentri7, NHSN, EPIC and Excel. Perform other duties as assigned to support the department, the hospital, the health system and the community. The includes the expectations of the Chester County DOH and The Pennsylvania Department of Health, the CDC and The Joint Commission (TJC). Participate in continuous TJC survey readiness and triennial survey. Responsible for Hand Hygiene monitoring and compliance and distribution of data to all departments. •Read and incorporate scientific evidence into the Infection Control practice. Maintain expertise in cleaning, disinfection and sterilization. Leadership of teams accessing and implementing IFUs for equipment cleaning and disinfection. •Able to respond to employee safety events, and works with Occupational Medicine to set up employee or patient/family exposure plans. •Assist in the organization of regularly scheduled Hospital Infection Prevention meetings and dissemination of recommendations hospital-wide. Should maintain a membership within local and national APIC. •Perform all employee duties within the Penn Medicine and entity values, policies and procedures. •Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization •Maintain all expectations of HIPAA. Accountabilities Knowledge of Infectious Disease Processes. Surveillance of microlab results. Knowledge of outbreak control and data analysis. Excellent communication skills to unit level stakeholders re infections and infectious processes, HAI decisions. Collaborates and provides leadership to clinical teams of Infection Control and Prevention principles. Provides formal and informal education to clinical teams. Participates in unit based and Nursing initiatives and provides a visible Infection Control Presence. •Collaborate with clinical and EOC teams to develop short term and long term Infection Prevention and Control goals. Develop and implement nursing unit, departmental, UPHS and UPHS level policies to prevent transmission of infectious agents. Maintains expertise by attending education. •Expert in state and national regulatory agencies and surveys – relevant to Infection Control.
