This position will focus on climate adaptation and hazard mitigation strategy development for communities across the nation in support of Dewberry clients in the Federal, State, local, and commercial space. The role will employ and build on an existing portfolio of strategies to include nature-based, hybrid and gray infrastructure solutions to mitigate an array of climate stressors. Candidates should have exposure to advancing projects through the engineering design and construction process, with an understanding of constructability and permitting needs. This role provides an opportunity to join an expanding team with significant growth potential, including career paths in project management and technical leadership.

Responsibilities

The Infrastructure Resilience Engineer will:

Provide technical support to ongoing and future resilience engineering and planning efforts related to transportation, water, energy, and community facility infrastructure.Support risk and vulnerability analyses of infrastructure considering multiple hazards (e.g., flooding, sea level rise, wind, and heat) and how climate change exacerbates those hazards.Work with a national portfolio of clients to characterize hazard loads, assess operational risks, identify mitigation strategies, and align strategies to funding sources.Apply climate science to inform resilient sectoral planning and design processes, as well as design manuals, policies, codes and standards.Work on diverse, multi-disciplinary teams to hone technical skills and programmatic knowledge.Collaborate with geospatial, computational science and informatics colleagues on developing and implementing technology to increase efficiency, communicate effectively, and accelerate innovation. Support the development of project deliverables including technical analyses, report development, project presentations and communicating findings to clients and stakeholders. Employ a mix of written, visual, and verbal communication techniques to craft compelling narratives and explain complex technical topics to various audiences. Prepare engineering plans, studies, reports, guides, and other technical documents.Apply social equity and environmental justice principles to technical and strategic work. Apply elements of behavioral science and communication to increase the effectiveness of deliverables.Represent Dewberry in meetings with clients and stakeholders to resolve complex issues and to plan and coordinate work.Assist Project Managers with developing technical and business proposals for new projects. Required Skills & Required Experience

Educational requirements:

Bachelor's Degree in Civil/Environmental Engineering or related engineering field.Master’s degree in similar fields is preferred.

Required skills and experience:

2-5 years of experience.Experience with engineering feasibility, design, implementation and monitoring.Strong advocate for climate resilience with well-developed persuasive verbal and written skills. Team player who fosters a collaborative, people-centered environment. Ability to build trusting, productive relationships with colleagues, clients and business partners. Ability to be self-motivated and function both independently and in a collaborative team environment.Well-developed time management skills, especially the ability to complete high-quality, detail-oriented deliverables on tight timelines amid competing deadlines within a diverse work group.Ability to perform an expanded array of tasks assigned by senior-level staff, designed to broaden experience and familiarization with methods, practices, and programs applicable to the department.Knowledge and ability to use the following computer applications: design software such as AutoCAD Civil 3D, MicroStation; Geospatial platforms such as ESRI and QGIS; and 3D rendering and visualization software.

Optional (nice to have):

Working knowledge of climate science data and state of science trends and ability to apply it to a variety of projects and cases.Experience with client interactions, task management, and business development.Comfort working with large geospatial datasets and performing or directing quantitative analyses.E.I.T. certification, with ability to obtain P.E. license within 2-4 years.

Work environment:

Work environment responsibilities may occasionally require an adjusted work schedule, overtime, and evening/weekend hours in order to meet deadlines.Occasionally, will be required to lift/carry up to 25 lbs.Computers, telephones, copiers, and printers are all used to perform tasks.Work is typically performed within an office, although field/site visits may be occasionally required.Works under the supervision of higher-level staff. Work is often reviewed for accuracy by senior staff.Must be able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust security clearance.Must have a valid driver’s license, good driving record and ability to pass a driving record background check.
