Primary Purpose Provides direct support to IV sterile compounding pharmacists/infusion pharmacists and pharmacy staff in preparing orders, packaging and labeling, tracking inventory, and maintaining records in accordance to state regulations and Parkland Health procedures.

 

Minimum Specifications Education

High School Diploma or GED

 

Experience

Must have three years of increasingly responsible pharmacy technician experience which includes 1 years of IV sterile compounding hospital experience including hazardous compounding.

 

Equivalent Education and/or Experience

 

Certification/Registration/Licensure

Current Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) certification by exam from the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCE) or the National Healthcare Association (ExCPT) is preferred

Must have current registration with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy.

Skills or Special Abilities

Must be able to demonstrate an advanced knowledge of a PC, and be able to use word processing, data base and spreadsheet software.

Must be able to pass Pharmacy pre-employment math and spelling test with a minimum score of 80%.

Must know Texas pharmacy laws that relate to a Pharmacy Technician.

Must possess advanced knowledge and skills in the operation of equipment used in assigned areas.

Must be able to demonstrate computer skills for areas of responsibility.

Must be able to demonstrate report writing skills.

Must possess advanced knowledge of different types of drugs, medical and health care terminology.

Must be able to perform effectively within the areas of responsibility.

 

Responsibilities

Compounds and dispenses IV sterile products and preparations of correct ingredient identity, purity, strength (including stability and compatibility), and sterility. Dispense products in appropriate containers that are labeled accurately and appropriately. Compounds and dispenses IV sterile products from all sterile product areas, including hazardous and total parenteral nutrition infusion.

Follows established procedures to prepare and distribute medication orders, sterile products under pharmacist's general supervision.

Immediately reports medication errors to the pharmacist on duty.

Assists in the maintenance of assigned areas, drug and supply inventory, equipment, and simple repair to ensure that pharmacy areas are operational, contain the necessary supplies, and are free from obstacles.

Accurately maintains and replenishes automation systems.

Ensures anteroom, clean room, compounding area, and related equipment are cleaned, sanitized and maintained in compliance with state regulations and Parkland Health & Hospital System policies and procedures.

Participates in departmental committees and special projects as assigned in order to improve the Pharmacy Department services and overall efficiency in support of the goals of the department and Parkland Health.

Acts as a resource person for non-judgmental pharmacy questions to medical staff, patients, and visitors.

Maintains satisfactory competence assessments during their time of employment. Maintains knowledge of applicable rules, regulations (including Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA)), policies, laws and guidelines that impact the Pharmacy area.

Maintains licensure as a Nationally Certified Pharmacy Technician. Adheres to applicable state/federal laws, and the program requirements of accreditation agencies and federal, state and private health plans. Completes continuing education requirements to keep license active. Seeks advice and guidance as necessary to ensure proper understanding.

Maintains a positive working relationship with job related contacts such as management, health care professionals, staff, and other employees in order to improve overall pharmacy services and to ensure that all job contacts are pleasant and productive. Effective in communication of care issues and professional interactions with peers and associates.

Must have National IV Certificate and maintain required yearly ACPE continuing education hours on IV sterile compounding focus.
