The appointee shall provide services as assigned by the supervisor in furtherance of the university’s missions and goals of patient care, teaching, research, outreach and public service. Primary clinical responsibilities include performing inpatient geriatrics consultation on patients admitted to OHSU Hospital. This includes new patient consultations as well as routine follow up consult visits for patients the team is already following. Collaboration with an interprofessional team including nurses, physicians, and advanced practice providers is a must.

 

This position reports to: Head of the Division of General Internal Medicine & Geriatrics, Chief of Geriatrics, and Inpatient Geriatrics Consult Service Medical Director.

 

This service serves as a training site for the OHSU Geriatric Medicine Fellowship, as well as for select OHSU and non-OHSU medical and non-physician trainees. Teaching should include bedside rounds and focus on techniques of eliciting a geriatrics-focused history and physical examination, expanding clinical reasoning and critical thinking, and applying and reviewing current best evidence for geriatrics practice. Teaching faculty are expected to provide pre-rotation orientation, mid-term formative feedback, and post-rotation verbal and written feedback.

 

The faculty member will be expected to participate in continuing education, professional and faculty development and scholarship as directed by their department. Additional funding support is potentially available for the exemplary candidate who has experience in quality initiative work and is assigned to help lead facility-wide Age-friendly Health System efforts.

 

Compensation for this position will include a base academic salary paid through the academic department with potential for a clinical salary from an incentive system based on the success and productivity of the service, as well as personal initiative.

Function/Duties of Position

Working collaboratively with the Inpatient Geriatrics team and DGIM to further development, implementation, operation, and evaluation of the interprofessional inpatient geriatrics program to improve the care we offer to hospitalized older adults. Duties include but are not limited to:

 Providing detailed consult recommendations to primary inpatient teams to optimize care of frail, medically complex hospitalized older adults.Promoting an integrated and interprofessional approach to patient care.Assuring effective and efficient patient flow.Bedside and didactic teaching of fellows, residents, students, and other learners regarding optimal care of hospitalized older adults.Assisting in the ongoing development and expansion of the Inpatient Geriatrics Program.Partnering with case managers & social workers regarding discharge planning.Educating patients and families throughout the stay and upon discharge.Communicating with primary care and facility providers to optimize transitions across care settings.   Using best practice clinical protocols and guidelines to achieve optimal patient outcomes.Participating in scholarly & systems improvement work associated with the Inpatient Geriatrics Program. Completion of ACGME-accredited geriatrics fellowship

New graduates considered

ABIM certification

Preferred Qualifications Clinical care experience.  Additional Details

Hours vary related to non-clinical responsibilities with flexible hours Monday - Friday with potential for some weekend work in the future. May be exposed to tissues and bodily fluids.
