Institutional Researcher, Center CIRCL

The Center for Collaborative Indigenous Research with Communities and Lands (Center CIRCL) is seeking a creative, imaginative mixed methods researcher who can use large datasets in combination with qualitative research to learn about the lived experiences and educational needs of Indigenous people living in New York City. Support the “This City is So Indigenous” Biennial Theme programming, the work of the Center CIRCL Fellows, and cohort of faculty, students, artists, and community-based researchers. Work with relevant offices in Faculty Affairs, Student Affairs and Student Success to provide an accurate overview of the needs and interests of current Indigenous faculty, students, and staff. Convey research findings and provide recommendations related to Center and institutional goals. Contribute to workshops, curriculum and pathway development, and other forms of communication about actionable research findings.
Responsibilities:
+ Support faculty, students, staff, and Center CIRCL Fellows in research needs related to the human geography, history, demography, education, and sociology of New York City as a home to Indigenous people. Help to identify relevant archives, and sources to support the research needs to participating faculty, students, artists, and community researchers. Be a resource to those creating research-based writing, art, curriculum related to Indigenous life in New York City.
+ Gather, refine, and interpret large datasets and conduct qualitative research (interviews and focus groups) to learn about the lived experiences and educational needs of Indigenous people living in New York City. Identify and interpret materials from pre-existing data sets, including US Census data and other sources. Design and conduct interviews and focus groups with people in NYU and New York City to learn about student and faculty needs.
+ Deliver research findings and provide recommendations related to Center and institutional goals.
+ Collaborate with relevant offices including Faculty Affairs, Student Affairs and Student Success to provide an accurate overview of the needs and interests of current Indigenous faculty, students, and staff.
+ Create visual displays for internal and public communication about the realities and educational needs of Indigenous people in New York City, the region, and at New York University. The main form of communication of research findings should be visual displays, slide shows, brief/specific reports, and other communications that can be added to existing projects, websites, curriculum, and other public-facing formats.
Required Education
+ Masters Degree
Required Experience
+ 2+ years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must include experience working with mixed methods and creating visual displays
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
+ Ability to interact with a diverse population at all levels. Excellent interpersonal, organizational, presentation and communication skills. Familiarity with standard Microsoft Office software and Adobe Acrobat.
Preferred Education
+ PhD in Human Geography, Indigenous Studies, History, Education, or related field
Preferred Experience
+ Familiarity with Indigenous Studies, experience working with Indigenous communities and/or students.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
+ Familiarity with social media platforms such as Instagram, and Canva.
Additional Information: In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the compensation for this position is $82,000-$90,000 USD. A New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
The Institutional Researcher will drive research-related efforts to understand the Indigenous communities that reside in New York City, demographic and policy-related descriptions of their everyday realities, educational needs, and other relevant information. The individual contributor will also engage in mixed methods empirical research with Indigenous students at NYU to learn about their experiences and needs as Indigenous students. The individual contributor will communicate findings from these efforts across domains in both text and compelling visual displays.
