Instructional Laboratory Support Specialist

The Instructional Laboratory Support Specialist supports the faculty members teaching Principles of Biology Lab in the departments of Biology and MB&B.
The position requires the individual to work 30 hours per week from mid-August to mid-May with time off during the summer. Primary working hours are 9:30-5:00 Monday-Thursday.
Responsibilities:
+ Ordering, preparing, setting-up, and cleaning-up reagents, chemicals, equipment, lab consumables, and other lab supplies for the Principles of Biology Lab courses each semester. There are multiple lab sections held throughout the week, and this position involves handling the materials and preparation for all lab sections each week.
+ Organizing and maintaining the chemical inventory in CEMS.
+ Coordinating the ordering and maintenance of animals used for teaching. These currently include planaria and sea urchins.
+ Maintaining the teaching lab spaces in a manner consistent with state and federal safety regulations. For example, properly tagging hazardous waste for disposal and completing weekly safety inspections.
+ Coordinating the requisition and organization of laboratory equipment, including handling routine equipment maintenance and equipment problems.
+ Assisting the faculty lab instructors with the support of graduate student TAs and undergraduate student CAs.
+ Assisting the faculty lab instructors with ordering supplies and materials needed to prepare and troubleshoot new experiments.
Minimum Qualifications:
+ Bachelors degree with a focus and/or major in biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, neuroscience, environmental science, ecology, botany, and/or a related subject and three years experience in STEM classroom support (student experience will be considered) or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.Ability to handle a variety of work priorities and demonstrate initiative.
+ Ability to follow through with instructions and work with a minimum of supervision.
+ Ability to use computer software to carry out procurement responsibilities.
+ Knowledge of basic inventory control and maintenance.
+ Experience working with biological and chemical samples and reagents.
+ Willingness to handle animals and animal specimens associated with the teaching labs.
+ Knowledge of basic biological and chemical safety regulations.
+ Experience with carrying out equipment maintenance and troubleshooting non-functioning equipment.
+ Experience with learning new techniques and labs.
+ Excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively with students, faculty, and university personnel.
+ Demonstrated commitment to work within a diverse environment and interact collegially with individuals of different backgrounds.
Preffered Qualifications:
+ Previous experience in an educational setting doing similar tasks
