The faculty of the Department of History at the University of South Carolina, Columbia campus, invites applications for a full time, professional-track position at the rank of Instructor to begin August 16, 2025. The position is a 9-month appointment with a teaching load of 8 courses for the academic year. This is an annual appointment that may be renewed contingent upon Dean’s approval, satisfactory performance, departmental needs, and the availability of funding.
The position requires a PhD in History (or related field) with demonstrable experience teaching and researching the history of the founding documents of the United States, government, namely the U.S. Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, the Federalist Papers, the Emancipation Proclamation and documents of the African American Freedom Struggle. Candidates must have an interest in shaping civics education for the 21st century. While ABD candidates are welcome to apply, the PhD must be conferred by the start date of 08/16/2025.
The successful candidates will teach HIST111 (U.S. History to 1865), HIST201 (America’s Founding Documents), HIST 469-470 (Constitutional History of the United States) and participate in a faculty learning community focused on various intellectual, social, cultural, economic, religious, and political aspects of the Founding Documents and their importance for civic engagement and reinvigorated democracy in the twenty-first century.
