The Faculty Scholars Program is pleased to offer an innovative program to graduating residents and obstetrician/gynecologists who would like to strengthen their teaching, research and clinical skills for future leadership roles in academic medicine. The program is geared to clinicians who want to enrich their research and clinical experiences before applying to subspecialty fellowship programs or pursuing academic global health endeavors.

The mission of the academic scholar’s program is to promote the next generation of national academic leaders in the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology and/or Global Health through comprehensive mentorship and career development.

The scholars program is unique based on the fostering of a collaborative environment between the scholars and experienced clinical and basic science faculty with successful academic track records in research. By this collaboration, the goal of the program is to strengthen the candidate’s academic foundation by providing basic science and clinical research opportunities, clinical and surgical mentorship, and professional development.

The program components include:
Research. A senior basic science faculty member will mentor the scholar on a one-on-one basis. Scholars will have dedicated time for the active participation of basic science research and for the writing of scholarly papers and abstracts.
Clinical excellence. The scholar will be assigned a senior clinical mentor to assist in establishing excellence in the delivery of preventive and long term clinical care in women’s health. Population health is one area that will be stressed.
Education/Mentorship. The scholar will be provided the teaching tools to educate learners at all different levels of training including residents and medical students. Candidate may pursue graduate education leading to a Master of Public Health degree (MPH) which will be awarded with the successful completion of the program.
Professional development. The scholar will be provided opportunities within both the department, the Robert Wood Johnson medical school and the Rutgers University for faculty development, career development, leadership skills and initiating of a teaching portfolio over the course of the program
Expected Outcomes
• The scholar will have obtained research, clinical and teaching skills to be productive in an Ob/Gyn academic setting or be competitive when applying for Global Health positions or subspecialty fellowship programs.
• The scholar will complete a project in the basic sciences and write a scholarly paper that is published in a peer reviewed journal.
• The scholar must be at least Board eligible. During the 2 year program the expectation is successful completion of OB/GYN Board Certification.
• The scholar will be capable of applying for competitive research grants
• Responsibilities also includes participation in a very busy clinical faculty practice; medical school and resident teaching; development of new clinical programs and expansion of existing programs and on call coverage at RWJ/Barnabas Perinatal Center in New Brunswick, New Jersey
