Description
Under general supervision, instructs department equipment operators in the operation, care and minor maintenance of heavy vehicular and other equipment . Evaluates employees’ equipment operation skills.
Examples of Duties
+ Instructs individuals or small groups in the operation of refuse collection vehicles, heavy vehicular, and other department equipment on simulated and practice route runs.
+ Accompanies trainees on practice route runs.
+ Checks for r equired driver license, endorsements , and certificates .
+ Explains and demonstrates the construction, function , and coordination of all parts of heavy vehicles and equipment.
+ Explains the cause of mechanical failures and the results of equipment abuse .
+ Assists in the preparation of programs of instruction for equipment operation personnel.
+ Instructs classes in safety and defensive driving techniques .
+ Instructs classes to prepare employees to meet commercial driver license requirements and recommends qualified trainees for commercial driver license certification .
+ Provides instructions in training classes utilizing approved methods of public contacts.
+ Reads and interprets routes maps and refuse collection procedures.
+ Prepares reports on investigations of abuse of equipment and equipment operation complaints.
+ Reviews, surveys , and assesses performance of employees in the operation of selected vehicles and determines the reasons for not meeting standards.
+ Completes evaluation summary forms.
+ Conducts accident prevention training for selected employees.
+ May perform additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Qualifications (required):
+ High school graduate or equivalent (G.E.D.).
+ Three (3) years of experience in operation of heavy refuse collection and other vehicles . Two (2) years of experience in the instruction and orientation of assigned equipment on regularly scheduled routes.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be substituted to meet the education and experience requirements of this position.

RETIREMENT BENEFITS
City Employees Retirement System
As a regular City employee you automatically become a member of the General Retirement System. This entitles you to a retirement allowance after:
• Completion of thirty (30) years of service;
- At age sixty (60) if you have at least ten (10) years of service, or
- At age sixty-five (65) with eight (8) years of service.
• In the event of disability, other eligibility rules apply);
- An early, actuarially reduced, retirement is offered after you have attained at least twenty-five (25) years of service;
• Employees are vested after ten (10) years of service, regardless of age.
