Instrumentation EngineerJob Summary:
Marathon Petroleum Corporation’s (MPC) Los Angeles Refinery located in Carson, California currently has a vacancy for an Instrument Engineer in the Area Engineering Department.
The Instrument Engineer will be responsible for providing technical support to their assigned refinery process areas and assigned projects managed by the Mid-Cap project team. They will also be responsible for managing instrument focused projects, from conceptual engineering through detailed design, construction, and project completion. The Instrument Engineer will report to the Instrument Engineering Supervisor. The available schedules for the position are 9/80, 5/40 or 4/1, after hours calls are required about once a year and support of TAR once or twice a year.
Key Responsibilities
Provide instrument technical support to operating areas and other Engineering disciplines.
Ensure assigned projects comply with all applicable company and industry standards and best practices
Perform primary and end element sizing, selection, and specification of field instrumentation including control valve sizing, thermowell vibration analysis, orifice calculations, etc.
Provide input into P&ID (piping and instrumentation diagrams) to reflect field changes. Provide support for HAZOPs, LOPA’s and perform Management of Change (MOC) reviews as needed.
Support Project Engineers by serving as an instrumentation technical resource in gated Front-End Loading process for capital projects. As needed, serves as project engineer on small instrumentation projects.
Provide technical input into scope preparation for improvement and replacement of instrumentation equipment. Provide technical specifications to Procurement for sourcing/requisition activities.
Ensure appropriate interdisciplinary coordination and efficient communication on every day assignments and projects.
Identify new instrument technologies and performs feasibility analyses. Creates instrument datasheets and reviews datasheets written by others.
Support SIS Safety Lifecycle program reviewing Safety Requirement Specifications (SRS), reviews Safety Integrity Level (SIL) and SIL ratings for Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) devices.
Work with other departments to ensure personnel understand function, capabilities and limitations of instrumentation.
Develop and perform factory acceptance tests and site acceptance tests. Collaborate in the commissioning and start-up activities, including; loop checking and calibration of instruments.
Experience, Education and Skills
Must have an Engineering degree in Chemical, Electrical, Mechanical or other related degree. (Education must be obtained/completed prior to start date) (Degree must be accredited in US.)
Must have at least 5 years of instrumentation engineering experience in a refinery, petro-chemical or other related heavy industry.
Must be proficient in Microsoft: Word, Excel and Outlook.
Must be able to wear appropriate PPE in the refinery (respirator), be able to physically perform all tasks in the field and take hair drug test and physical.
Must have a valid driver’s license. (MPC determines valid status.)
Must be able to obtain a TWIC Card.
Must be legally authorized to work in the US without the need for future VISA sponsorship.
Travel Requirement is 5% or less.
