The Department of Integrative Biology and Physiology at UCLA is seeking an instructor
to teach Physiological Science 200: Advanced Experimental Statistics for Winter 2025 in academic year 2024-2025.
Salary range: The posted UC salary scales (https://www.ucop.edu/academic-personnel-programs/compensation/index.html) set the minimum pay determined by the experience level at time of hire. See Table 15: Unit 18 Faculty, Pre-Six Year Appointments, Academic Year. The annual salary range for this position is $68,247 (Salary Point 1) - $72,404 (Salary Point 3) effective July 1, 2024.
Duties: Teach a four-hour weekly lecture course on introductory statistics concepts (see course content below). Plan and coordinate a one-hour weekly lab session; supervise the course teaching assistant; oversee the acquisition and maintenance of course materials; supervise student projects; and hold regular office hours.
Fundamental concepts in statistics:
a. Summary of data using numbers and graphs including confidence statements
about the data (confidence intervals, p-values, etc)
b. Statistical models, what they are, why we need them.
c. What is Bayesian statistics and how can we use advanced sampling techniques
to develop complex models.
d. Summarizing observation with many attributes (high dimensional) using
unsupervised learning, i.e. PCA, non-linear dimensionality reduction, clustering.
e. Predictive models and machine learning.
Practical data analysis in the statistical programing language R
a. Programming in R, variables, loops, logical structures, functions
b. Building and evaluating statistical models
c. Develop and implement permutation-based statistical tests.
d. Dimensionality reduction and clustering in R.
e. How to cluster data in R in many different ways, tools to evaluate clusters.
Qualifications: Ph.D. degree in the biological and/or physical sciences is preferred but not required. An advanced degree in any relevant field will be considered. Level of appointment and salary commensurate with qualifications, experience, and duties.
