Position Summary:
The Intermittent Float Nurse is an integral part of the Heritage College nursing team, ensuring the integrity and quality of clinical care and research at the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. This role ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, Institutional Review Board ( IRB ) approvals, and institutional policies and procedures. The Float Nurse will independently perform medical tasks or assist with procedures in the clinical setting, working with diverse populations and a range of conditions, including those involving investigational products or procedures. A strong understanding of medical procedures (e.g., IV insertion, venipuncture, medication administration and accountability, ECG , etc.) and excellent bedside manner are essential. The Float Nurse will primarily be assigned to the Clinical & Translational Research Unit ( CTRU ) but will also have opportunities to support other clinical units within the Heritage College, performing various clinical tasks such as vaccinations, patient education, and teaching skills labs. Adaptability and a strong, team-oriented attitude are key to success in this role.
Position Responsibilities:
Performing Medical Tasks and Assisting with Medical Procedures:
Clinical settings within the Heritage College vary widely, many requiring the performance of medical tasks or procedures. The float nurse must have a proven track record of technical expertise and experience in performing invasive procedures under time-sensitive conditions, such as setting and maintaining IV lines and troubleshooting equipment. Key job duties include:
+ Collecting samples (e.g., venipuncture, fingersticks, urine, fecal)
+ Assisting in medical procedures including biopsies, insulin clamping procedures, etc.
+ Administering drugs (e.g., IV, injection, oral, etc.), distribution of investigational drug or intervention and provides patient teaching regarding administration or procedures, as necessary
+ Obtaining and processing collected samples (e.g., obtaining blood via venipuncture, blood processing, drug infusion, biopsies, etc.)
+ Performing medical tests (e.g., vital signs, imaging studies, electrocardiograms) · Providing clinical care and promoting health improvement for adults/children and communities in southeastern Ohio through education, screening, and improved access to health services
+ Ensuring compliance with protocols and program guidelines through accurate documentation and reporting
+ Documenting medical history and data accurately in the electronic medical record ( EMR ), with a strong understanding of EMR systems and responsibility for proper documentation.
+ Obtaining authorization for release of medical information as necessary and ensuring follow up care and continuity of care with personal care providers
+ Providing education and medical information for disease management, supporting clinical skills labs for curriculum activities or workshops, and assisting with clinical competency assessments
The Float Nurse will also participate in various activities within the CTRU and Heritage College, including but not limited to:
+ Participating in Business Continuity Planning activities for the CTRU
+ Attending regular research team, organization, or CTRU team meetings to discuss ongoing and upcoming activities
+ Completing required training and maintaining proficiency with relevant technologies and procedures
+ Traveling to promote Heritage College activities, study needs, or community initiatives
+ Providing training or presentations to university, community, or other groups (e.g. medical students, graduate students, etc.)
+ Performing other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
+ Bachelor of Science in Nursing ( BSN ) or Bachelor of Science (BS) with a valid RN license from the state of Ohio
+ 3 years of related professional experience
+ Valid driver’s license
+ American Heart Association ( AHA ) Basic Life Support ( BLS ) Healthcare Provider certification and willingness to obtain AHA BLS Healthcare Provider Instructor certification
+ Nursing competencies within the scope of practice, including performing vital signs, administering medications (IV, injections, oral, etc.), and assisting with medical procedures (e.g., biopsies, surgeries)
Preferred Qualifications:
+ At least one year of clinical research experience preferred
+ Knowledge of clinical trials and GCP (Good Clinical Practice) concepts preferred

Advertised Salary:
The approved hiring range for this position is $32.65 – $40.67 per hour. Offers outside of this range of subject to additional approvals. The final offer will be commensurate with the candidate’s education and experience in relation to the minimum qualifications for the position.
