As an Intern, you will be given the opportunity to apply your academic training and skills in a real-world setting at any number of project locations. In addition, you will assist the project manager, project engineer, and the rest of the on-site construction staff in the application of principles, methods, and techniques of engineering technology by performing any combination of the following duties at a project job site.
Flatiron is currently hiring for Interns to support our Canadian Operations at the Richmond, BC office and surrounding projects (Keating in Saanich, Ruskin in Mission and Steveston in Richmond).
What you will be doing Assist in the review of project requirements, construction documents, drawings, special provisions and specifications as directed by your manager.Work independently and/or with other team members to assist in the production of detailed and accurate quantity takeoff’s, utilizing design drawings and specifications outlined in the scope of work. Perform or assist with cost estimates by conceptualizing the construction process, to determine manpower, equipment and material requirements, and crew productivities.Partake in weekly internal meetings, joint venture meetings and bid reviews.Contact subcontractors and suppliers and distribute bid packages to solicit quotations and pricing, and assist in the evaluation of subcontractors' bids.Continuously learn and expand knowledge of modelling and estimating software programs, such as AutoCAD, Trimble and HCSS Heavy Bid; as well as increasing your understanding of multiple phases of complex construction projects and how the sequencing of operations occur.Communicate regularly verbally and through email with owner, designers, subcontractors, joint venture partners, and colleagues.Regularly utilize Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, macros, arrays).Continuously expand knowledge of complex multi-discipline construction projects with scopes that may include earthworks, bridge and interchange structures, underground utilities, paving, and geotechnical components. In performing any number of these tasks, you will actively support published corporate policies and set a productive and consistent work example. What we are looking for Must be flexible in assignment location and able to accept work on temporary assignment in various locations.Currently enrolled in Mechanical Engineering or a similar program at an accredited technical college or university.Experience in a construction and/or engineering environment is an asset;Ability to freely access all points of a construction site in wide-ranging climates and environments;Beginner knowledge of construction equipment and techniques, drawing and specifications, building materials and required standards applicable to the project;Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel and Word);Beginner knowledge of AutoCAD and/or HCSS Heavy Bid Estimating Software is an asset;Strong work ethic – highly motivated and willing to do what it takes to get the job done right;Strong organizational and time management skills.Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
