Intern, Environmental Health and Safety

Job Description

his application is for a 12-week internship role from June - August 2025 (potential to extend part time through DEC 25). Resume review begins in January 2025. 

The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) team maintains Biogen’s license to operate by fostering a culture of safety, compliance, and sustainability that protects our employees and community. Core EHS programs include Biosafety, Chemical Hygiene, Radiation Safety, Occupational Health, Emergency Response, Environment and Sustainability, and EHS Management Systems. 

Position Description 

As an intern, you will support EHS efforts in the labs and office areas.  Responsibilities include, but are not limited to biosafety, chemical safety, hazardous waste management, inspections, environmental programs and sustainability. 

Day to day responsibilities: 

Assist EHS program managers with implementation of EHS program related to compliance, risk, and culture. Perform regular site walkthroughs to engage with employees and identify hazards. Participation in EHS governance meetings and program planning. 

Example projects may include: 

Project #1 Implement EHS communication and engagement plan including the development of EHS newsletters, internal communications, and in-person events Project #2 Assist in the implementation of the EHS Inspection Program including tracking completion, partnering with inspectors to address noncompliance findings, and creating reports and metrics for leadership. Project #3 Partnering with the Biosafety Officer and Principal Investigators to review and update Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) protocols 

Qualifications

Demonstrated technical ability regarding EHS regulations. The position requires but is not limited to the following:  

General knowledge of EHS regulations and compliance. Understanding of basic biological and chemical science principles;  Ability to communicate with peers and management;  Effective organizational skills;  Ability to multi-task and coordinate multiple activities in parallel;  Developing or demonstrated troubleshooting and problem solving skills;

To participate in the Biogen Internship Program, students must meet the following eligibility criteria: 

Legal authorization to work in the U.S. At least 18 years of age prior to the scheduled start date Be currently enrolled in an accredited community college, college or university 

Education 

In the process of earning a Bachelor’s degree or higher in safety, occupational health, life sciences and/or engineering (biology, biochemistry, biomedical engineering, chemistry, chemical engineering, chemistry, chemical, biological engineering, molecular biology, etc.) or environmental.
