Your Opportunity 

Stantec is seeking an intern to support research on ecosystem services at solar energy facilities, with a particular focus on soil-related ecosystem services. This position involves close collaboration with Argonne National Laboratory and its partners on ongoing projects. The project will focus on understanding community interest and/or resistance to the development of solar energy facilities on tribal lands in the Midwest. A main goal of the internship will be to develop educational content on ecosystem services utilizing relevant experience in communications and partnership building. The material content will address solar development with and without management for ecosystem services and include information about potential benefits of and barriers to implementation of such management practices. Another component of the internship will be general support of ongoing research on the environmental aspects and impacts of energy sources, particularly large-scale solar facilities.

There are several opportunities available: 

Spring 2025 Semester internship – Approximately 15 hours/week, 15 weeks, starting in February 2025 Summer 2025 Internship – Full time; 10-15 weeks, starting May or June 2025. Work hours may exceed 40-hours/week when conducting summer field work.   Your Key Responsibilities Aid in the completion of fieldwork, assessments, reports, and developing educational content to be used for public communications. Compile and manage field data to be used in project work. Undertake as needed field work, including construction observation as well as water, soil, and air sampling, and other field reconnaissance. Coordinate with senior level staff and/or multidisciplinary team members to ensure that the project's needs are met in a timely and effective manner. Follow established safety standards, policies, procedures, and guidelines to ensure safety of yourself and your teams while completing assignments. Your Capabilities and Credentials Highly motivated and dependable Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and take direction. Willingness to learn new skills while undertaking work assignments. A working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Strong technical writing, interpersonal, and communication skills. Ability to perform field work, if required.  Prior working knowledge of statistics and GIS to help support data analysis (or willingness to learn) is a plus, but not required. Ability to travel regionally and locally as required for project needs. Ability to lift and move items and equipment up to 25 lbs. Must have a safe driving record and valid driver’s license. Must pass a pre-employment physical and drug screen. Education and Experience Current enrollment as junior or senior in bachelor’s or master’s degree program in Geology, Environmental Science, or related engineering or scientific field, preferred.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

Typical office environment includes working with computers and working at a desk for extended periods of time. Candidate must be willing and have the ability to travel and spend time working away from home or office. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
