Summer Intern - Junior Interior Designer

The Intern - Junior Interior Designer assists in providing options for design concepts and planning services to achieve client needs, considering factors such as cost, budget, and environment limitations. This includes research to select furnishings and finishes, planning, CAD drawings, preparing presentation materials, and site visits to verify field conditions. They work with internal BGIS staff as well as client and external consultants and suppliers, as required, to ensure timely, successful implementation of design initiatives.

End date: end of August

Location: hybrid, remote work along with on-site visits to office and project sites where possible

 

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES​

Supports interior design activities including needs analysis, stacking and blocking plans, finishes and furnishings selection, design options, sample boards, specification writing, working drawings, renderings, deficiency identification. Supports development of material cost estimates, project specification and tender documents. Assists in development of design concepts that meet client needs and with consideration to work process, culture, project implementation plans, serviceability, sustaining cost, environmental considerations (LEED), impact to related building systems and other project specific conditions. Renders design ideas in the form of 3-D renderings, work drawings, plans, models and schemes. As applicable to the assignment, with supervision, delivers projects of appropriate complexity, including site visits to verify field conditions and deficiencies. Research new products and materials and value engineered options. Present materials and drawings to demonstrate new concepts thought starters and design intent. Maintain Standards Binder for client. Collect data from Lessons Learned session for pilot project.

 

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

Working towards a College or University Degree in Interior Design. Interior design and documentation expertise. Awareness of building issues, building and safety codes, the range of relevant products and materials, ergonomics, LEED, Bill 124 and applicable industry standards and regulations. Ability to develop creative but functional interior design solutions to solve Client issues. Awareness of cost estimating and project specification writing. Proficient with AutoCAD and related software; MS project, Word, Excel, PowerPoint Strong organizational, time management and multi-tasking abilities. Effective interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills. Effective client service skills with ability to manage client expectations or redirect to supervisor as needed.

Licenses and/or Professional Accreditation

Intern member with Association of Registered Interior Designers of Ontario (ARIDO) or equivalent certification.
