Job Duties

Weighs, measures, and mixes ingredients necessary for compounding and preparing medications, emulsions, liquids, powders and ointments using such equipment as graduates, balances, mortars, pestles and funnels.
Assists with filling prescriptions and medication orders; prepares labels and delivers medications to all patient care areas.
Makes unit dose rounds, retrieves medication orders and delivers medication to patient care areas in a timely manner. Delivers floor stock controlled drugs to patient care areas according to established protocols.
Fills unit dose medication cassettes and extemporaneous medication products as requested.
Maintains all required records both legal and hospital, including controlled drugs, manufacturing and packaging records.
Prepares sterile products (e.g., intravenous admixtures, Total Parenteral Nutrition [TPN] solutions, irrigation solutions) as required using aseptic technique with a laminar air flow hood under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist.
Provides drug information to physicians, nurses, and patients under the supervision of a pharmacist.
Performs monthly inspections of patient care areas.
Assessment, treatment and patient care responsibilities are delivered with a knowledge of patient growth and development and are appropriate to the ages of the patients served.
Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
Answers telephone, receiving and relaying messages as required.
Maintains work area in a neat and orderly manner.
Enhances professional growth and development through participation in education programs, current literature, in-service meetings, workshops and pharmacy staff meetings.
Makes suggestions to assist the pharmacy manager in developing innovative programs to improve the efficiency and quality of patient care.
Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. May be expected to assist with those activities that are routinely performed by a Pharmacy Technician or Aide.

BASIC COMPETENCIES
Education/Licensure
Completion of the third year of an approved College of Pharmacy program.

Experience
No prior experience required.

Skills
Computer entry skills are necessary.
Must possess good oral communication and interpersonal skills.
Must speak, read, and write English to the extent required by the position.

JOB SETTING/PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Works in well-lighted, temperature controlled pharmacy; requires standing for long periods; the noise level is usually moderate; work is fast paced. Subject to shift rotation. Subject to exposure to bloodborne pathogens, dust, fumes, odors, mists, gasses, biological, mechanical, electrical, chemical and other hazardous materials.
The incumbent is expected to adhere to the Hospital’s Drug and Smoke Free work environment and to adhere to OSHA mandates and precautionary measures.

Pharmacy department and facility wide, contact with patients and staff. Periods of prolonged sitting and/or prolonged standing.
