Intern, R&D Engineer

R&D Engineering Summer Intern will assist R&D Team in product, process, machining and/or materials development.  Activities to include experimentation, testing, equipment operation, data collection and analysis, report writing, and procedure writing.  In addition, Intern will participate on prototype fabrication projects, and will be exposed to engineering drawings, hands-on processing tasks, advanced ceramic and metal composite materials, and inspection (properties, dimensions, etc.).  The position will see a broad range of commercial applications and industries such as semiconductor capital equipment, LCD capital equipment, industrial refractory and wear, thermal management, laser, armor, and more. 

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Processing and learning about the manufacture, development, machining, precision finishing, inspection, and assembly of reaction bonded ceramic and metal matrix composite materials Supporting R&D Engineering team with day to day activies which could include: Hands on processing of parts from casting slurries through programming and loading high-temperature vacuum furnaces Conducting  hands-on tasks to support new product development/prototyping Programming and operation of advanced machining equipment (CNC) Characterization of materials including microstructure or measurement of material properties Inspection of prototype dimensions, both manually and via computer controlled CMMs Design and fabrication of fixtures and molds (e.g., via 3D printing) Prepare end of Summer Power Point document with highlights of activities

Education & Experience

Enrolled in Engineering or Science program Relevant engineering skills from classwork a strong plus, such as CAD, statistics, programming, science labs, others

Skills

Familiarity with manufacturing and/or lab environment Strong mechanical aptitude Willingness to participate in wide range of activities, including hands-on manufacturing support, new product prototyping and desk-based report writing

Working Conditions

Position requires on-site activities for prototype fabrication (this is not a remote position).

Work schedule is 5 days, 40 hrs per week, first shift.

Physical Requirements

Hands-on, lab-based job environment:

Required to frequently lift/push/pull a minimum of 35 lbs Must be able to sit, bend, squat and walk about facility Depending on project assignment, may be required to walk/stand for majority of day
