Opportunity Summary

The Fairview Energy Center, one of the world’s most advanced natural gas combined cycle power plants, is offering a Summer Internship opportunity for students interested in power generation and engineering. Featuring cutting-edge GE Frame 7HA.02 Gas Turbines and a GE Steam Turbine, this facility was recognized as Power Magazine's Top U.S. Facility in 2020. Located in the scenic Laurel Highlands, the plant provides a unique setting for hands-on learning in a high-performance energy environment. Interns will gain valuable experience in power plant operations, maintenance, and engineering while working alongside industry professionals.

Here's a look at the projects planned during this internship period:

Environmental:

Review, update, and revise the RWT Lab QA/QC Manual to ensure accuracy and compliance. Conduct influent and effluent sampling for each greensand filter to assess performance and verify guarantees, including service water greensand filters. Review, update, and revise the plant’s NAES Waste Management Plan and Water Management Plan to align with current regulations and best practices.

Mechanical – Electrical:

Review, update, and revise engineering drawings and P&ID diagrams to ensure accuracy and consistency. Conduct performance evaluations on key equipment, including pumps, motors, SCR blowers, and gearboxes, to assess efficiency and reliability. Assist with thermodynamic and heat transfer analysis to evaluate plant efficiency, working alongside the plant engineer on various optimization projects. Clean up and update drawings to match all Management of Change (MOC) modifications, ensuring documentation reflects the latest plant configurations.

Primary Functions

Assist in the daily operation and monitoring of power plant systems Conduct routine inspections and preventive maintenance tasks under supervision Participate in troubleshooting and problem-solving activities related to plant equipment Support environmental compliance efforts through data collection and analysis Collaborate with cross-functional teams to optimize plant performance and efficiency Learn and adhere to safety protocols and procedures to ensure a safe working environment

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g. hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Work with hazardous materials may be required.

Fitness for Duty

All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.
