Intern Corporate Research and Development

Powell is dedicated to the future growth and talent of our company.  We offer internship opportunities to college students through a 10-week internship program. Our interns receive hands on experience, training and the opportunity to work on a project in their specific area of study.

Project Details:

Document Management for R&D –Technical Databases--Assignments

Support Technical Director in creating a database of external testing reports

Support Technical Director with PFAS program documentation (per-and polyflourinated substances) program

Currently R&D data is stored in folders in pdf and word format, there is wait to obtain reports or do more efficient search; project aim is in producing metadata and loading it on a database that produces report forms, plots statistics, etc.; the current search of test reports, results, verification of which product line was tested (or is due for testing) is manually driven

Produce database with list of current products that are critical to the business and record PFAS contents, identify PFAS alternatives, test performance of materials and assess if they are suitable replacements (the student will learn how laboratory testing is conducted, specified, interpreted, etc. for physical/chemical/electrical properties)

Expected deliverables;

Select or create a software platform, and setup database parameters

Database of R&D tests (with metadata) produced for development products

Database of R&D tests (with metadata) produced for certification of existing products

System alerts for products that are due for certification tests

Scan and digitalize old test reports – add to database

Statistics report functionality

Test reports of:

Equipment due for test certification

Statistics of equipment type per category (voltage, AR – Non-AR, ampacity, features, standards met, etc.): qty, plots, charts

R&D report on exploratory tests, development tests

Report on PFAS items

The current status for searching if an equipment was tested or certified is manual. It leads to inefficiencies in time or in being unable to obtain the latest report, or a given test. This is crucial as having a database that can be accessed, reports made, consulted, the R&D staff can make faster and more accurate decisions. External and internal laboratory time is precious, and they are normally fully booked, so having the ability to be more on the planning side rather than reactive in finding needs is beneficial.

Benefits of our program:

· Team environment
· Meaningful work projects
· Exposure and interaction with business leaders
· Fun social events
· Scholarship opportunities
