Intern - Ships Management (Summer 2025)

SUMMARY

 

This is a trainee position with the primary objective of development during an 8-12 week period. Interns will work with members of various areas in support of ongoing and/or future shipbuilding programs. The assignment may be in Production and/or Production Support.

 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES

 

Interns may be given the opportunity to review processes and documentation and participate in Process Improvement Teams. Additionally, they will have the opportunity to suggest recommendations to department manager(s) for process improvements and participate in the implementation of recommended improvements. Develops overall knowledge of shipbuilding processes and managerial skills. Contributes to team performance to safety, quality, cost and schedule objectives. Suggest recommendations for improvement and initiate implementation of improvement. Completes all projects/assignments in time allotted. Evaluates performance at the culmination of assignment Actively participates in implementing and monitoring continuous improvement initiatives to improve safety, improve quality, reduce cycle time, and reduce costs.

 

Reports to department manager/supervisor on a regular basis to monitor status of assigned projects. Interacts with SOC Managers, General Supervisors, Trade Supervisors, Ship Managers, Superintendents, Engineers, Planners, Safety representatives, customers, vendors and subcontractors.

 

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

 

Current enrollment in an accredited college or university program required. Must be a Junior, graduating in 2026 A broad understanding of maritime industry operations is desired but not required.  Must have some understanding of world-class manufacturing techniques. Proficient in the following computer applications: Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Must have the ability to express ideas in oral and written formats and demonstrate a high degree of personal flexibility.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

 

Work occurs in both an outdoor shipyard environment and in an office setting. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus.  Regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers, operate computer keyboard and controls, and communicate verbally and in writing. 

Requires ability to commute physically to various areas of the shipyard including but not limited to shipboard activities. Must be capable of ascending/descending stairs or ladders, walking on uneven surfaces, and transiting through manholes and other confined, congested spaces. Physical dexterity must allow for bending and reaching. Must remain alert and comply with all safety requirements. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is exposed occasionally to dust, fumes, and smoke. Must be able to spend up to 75% of time in an outdoor shipyard environment in all climates. The noise level is relatively low to moderate in office environments.  The noise level in the outdoor shipyard production environment is moderate to noisy 70% of time which may include sirens, horns, chipping, and hammering.

 

Pay Range: $49,500 - $64,100

 

This pay range is a reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role. It takes into account the wide range of factors considered in making compensation decisions; including but not limited to skill sets, experience, training, and education.
