General NotesThe University of Texas at Austin Police Department Internal Affairs Investigator is a sworn peace officer position that assists the police administration in maintaining the public trust by conducting investigations of sworn and non-sworn employees involved in criminal activities, use of force incidents, or violations of departmental policies. The investigator receives and investigates all complaints whether received from community members or university employees in accordance with University policies and Texas State labor law. The position is open to both internal and external candidates.

PurposeTo conduct thorough, unbiased, investigation of all complaints received against police department employees and maintain the integrity of related documentation and systems.
ResponsibilitiesPlan, organize, conduct, and document administrative investigations into allegations of misconduct by sworn and non-sworn UTPD employees. Document and prepare extensive case files to support investigations and conclusions; coordinate investigations, reviews, and analyses with UTPD chain of command and outside agencies; organize and complete case reports and case files within mandatory time frames.Plan, organize, and conduct on- and off-scene interviews of complainants, involved employees, and witnesses; document all interviews with appropriate media, including digital recordings and written transcriptions; adhere, observe, and follow departmental policy and established labor law in regard to employee and due process rights.Interpret evidence; coordinate staff training covering internal affairs processes; research law enforcement best practices; assist with pre-employment background screening; respond to requests for additional information.Maintain and oversee the department's established system for storing, accessing, and retaining evidence generated from body worn cameras and fleet camera systems.Other duties as assigned involving investigation, information gathering or related topics.Required QualificationsTen years of experience assigned to a full time position at a full-service law enforcement agency.Five years of experience assigned to a full time position as an investigator or detective for a full-service law enforcement agency. Applicants must meet the Texas Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (TLETS) access eligibility criteria as contained in the FBI Criminal Justice Information Systems Security Policy. Must be able to obtain a Texas driver’s license and have an acceptable driving history. The ability to obtain a TCOLE peace officer license.Successful completion of a background investigation.Successful completion of firearms qualification.Completion of psychological examination.Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred QualificationsThree years of experience assigned to a full time position as an Internal Affairs Investigator at a full-service law enforcement agency.Completion of an Internal Affairs Investigator course.Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college.Currently hold a TCOLE peace officer's license or have less than 180 days in break of service.Working ConditionsMay be required to work non-traditional schedule at times to include periods of on-call response. 40 hours per week; may require flexible scheduling at times.Salary RangeOpen
