The Internal and Operations Communications team in the Communications and Public Affairs division of Argonne National Laboratory seeks a project manager to act as a strategic communications specialist focused on our employee population. They will help us provide the information, resources, and support that staff need to succeed, whether in scientific leadership or operational excellence. This position helps sustain the collaborative, inclusive culture that attracts and retains our world-class community of talent. By creating and implementing multichannel communications plans, the project manager will partner with subject matter experts from across the laboratory to meet the goals set by laboratory management.
As a key contributor to Argonne's mission, you will provide strategic communications support and guidance for initiatives and projects, assisting with both long- and short-term strategic planning. Acting as a communications project leader, you will deliver effective and timely materials—including documents, brochures, videos, website content, and more—to promote a positive awareness of Argonne’s accomplishments and priorities to internal and external audiences. With a focus on lab wide and operations-centered messaging, you will ensure employees have access to the tools and information they need while fostering a vibrant and inclusive laboratory culture and community.
The successful candidate will possess strong strategic planning skills and the habits to execute multiple projects of overlapping time frames effectively. Excellent listening skills will help them define partners’ goals and metrics, and clear, accurate communication skills will help drive employees to the actions required. The project manager must be able to work well independently or in collaboration as part of various fast-paced teams.
Position Requirements
Expertise in effectively creating and implementing strategic communications plans and evaluating their impact to achieve goals established by laboratory management
Outstanding research, writing, and editing capabilities, including the ability to source content, interview experts, distill and translate scientific and operational content for an internal audience that ranges from high school to Ph.D. levels of sophistication
Knowledge of best practices in internal communications and employee engagement, including change management
Understanding of diverse workforce needs for a population with a significant number of international employees and users/visitors where English is not their native language
Knowledge of digital internal communications platforms and tools (e.g., generative artificial intelligence, email distribution platforms, newsletter templates, basic HTML, Photoshop, digital display screen management)
Ability to produce timely and effective communications for high-visibility Laboratory programs, including emergency and time-sensitive situations
Availability to contribute to crisis management communications outside standard business hours
Aptitude for working collaboratively with other Communications team members with expertise in creative, events, and writing
Experience in communications or journalism
Capacity to quickly learn the structure of a complex, cutting-edge Laboratory and understand its functions and activities
Familiarity with public relations practices and procedures
Knowledge of web content management, particularly intranets and knowledge management systems
Basic event planning
Ability to meet deadlines
