Internal Audit Director

Ameresco has an immediate opening for an Internal Audit Director - Global Head of Internal Audit and Sarbanes-Oxley where you will lead Ameresco’s global Internal Audit and SOX Compliance Program overseeing risk and materiality assessments, control design reviews, testing, and reporting in a highly innovative and rapidly evolving environment. This position will lead the transition from a co-sourced internal audit model to a hybrid in-house model and will report to the Ameresco Audit Committee under the supervision of the Chief Accounting Officer. With a focus on collaboration and innovation, you will work closely with cross-functional teams to navigate complex situations that may impact the company’s internal controls over financial reporting. The ideal candidate will be a strategic thinker with a passion for internal controls, risk management, and compliance and has a track record of success in leading high-performing teams.

A deep understanding of IT controls, risk assessment, and SOX regulations is essential, along with the ability to drive compliance initiatives throughout the organization.

Responsibilities:

Develop and implement a comprehensive internal audit strategy aligned with the company’s objectives.Lead the Company's SOX compliance program and act as a central point of contact and subject matter expert to ensure appropriate internal controls (manual and system) over financial reporting are designed and implementedDevelop internal controls over ESG reportingWork with ESG Ambassadors and outside consultants to prepare for assurance and oversee limited assurance engagement over ESG metrics as required by relevant regulationsOn-going project management of the SOX program, including overseeing the coordination efforts between third party Internal Audit/SOX co-sourced providers, external auditors, and business process ownersDrive SOX scoping and risk assessment by collaborating with cross-functional teams, including accounting, IT, and others, within the Company to stay up to date on significant changes that may have an impact on the design and/or operating effectiveness of controlsMaintain on-going communication with external auditors including alignment on SOX planning, walkthroughs/testing, audit requests, and deficiency evaluationDrive execution of program status updates reports for control owners, the executive management and the Audit and Risk Committee highlighting overall SOX progress and key observationsEducate business process and internal control owners by leading training sessions on compliance requirementsMaintain awareness of evolving SOX regulations and communicate related implications to stakeholdersDevelop comprehensive process documentation, including control narratives, flowcharts, and risk/control matricesAnalyze control deficiencies, providing strategic recommendations for remediation plansPlan, coordinate, and oversee control testing conducted by outsourced internal audit to evaluate the controls operational effectivenessReview and analyze testing results, identifying trends, and providing insights to IT and finance managementEnsure timely resolution of control deficiencies and oversee remediation effortsClearly communicate control deficiencies, progress, and remediation plans to stakeholdersIdentify opportunities to enhance control procedures and improve compliance program effectivenessDrive initiatives to streamline compliance processes and improve control testing efficiencyCollaborate with Workiva CSR and outsourced internal audit team to leverage technology that enhances control effectivenessPerform other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

BA/BS in Accounting, Finance, or Business AdministrationMinimum ten (10) years of SOX and Internal Audit experience in a Big Four or other national level firm and/or within an Internal Audit function of a large, global organization

Additional Qualifications:

Experience utilizing Workiva’s GRC platform is a big plusExperience in leading and managing teams, consisting of company employees and resources provided by a co-sourced providerKnowledge of the COSO framework and experience applying the framework that supports SOX compliance and operational efficienciesExperience in ITGC audits and testing over enterprise corporate systems (e.g., Microsoft D365, Workday, ADP)Experience with controls over multiple components and technical areas such as business combinations, non-controlling interest, derivatives and other complex technical accounting items would be a plusStrong organizational skills with a demonstrated track record of concurrently managing multiple key projects with competing deadlinesExcellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to deliver effective presentations to all audiences, including executive leadership and the Board and its CommitteesStrong leadership skills with the ability to build relationships across organizational levels and cultures, and to influence others without direct authority.Ability to make decisions with significant, broad implications for the management and operations of a major department or multiple departments.Problem solving experience that demonstrates critical and logical thinking to reach a solutionCPA, CIA, and/or CISA certifications strongly preferred
