Internal Communications Director - Digital Lead
The Position

The Opportunity 

The Genentech Employee and Community Engagement team within the Corporate Communications team is seeking an experienced communications professional who is passionate about developing and implementing communication strategies to drive business performance, employee engagement and organizational culture.The right individual will be able to lead and collaborate with executive and external communications teams, senior leaders and stakeholders to develop communications plans and strategies, see them through to completion and connect the dots with other projects and priorities. This individual will lead the digital communication and engagement strategy and execution; design and deliver internal communication strategies, campaigns, change management communication, and cultural engagement efforts; develop innovative ways to engage employees that inspire them to action; and write clear and exceptional communications, business update presentations, narratives and talking points. You will develop and execute communications plans at the enterprise-wide level and serve as the primary communications business partner for certain core functions of the organization. As a strategic thought partner and trusted advisor to senior leadership, you will provide ongoing support and guidance on how communication strategies can drive organizational priorities.

Key Responsibilities:

Assume responsibility for assigned communications projects and serve as a primary contact for specific functions across the enterprise

Lead the design, evolution and execution of a digital communications and engagement strategy that aligns with the organization’s goals and enhances internal messaging and engagement

Lead the content strategy,  editorial planning and content creation and dissemination across all digital channels, including managing and producing high-quality internal publications and newsletters that bring the business narrative and Our Promise to life and effectively communicate company news, updates, and initiatives to employees 

Oversee the publication process across all enterprise-wide digital channels, from concept to distribution, ensuring deadlines are met and quality standards are maintained

Serve as a trusted communications advisor to senior leadership, providing guidance on effective communication strategies and facilitating messaging during key organizational changes or initiative

Lead the design of organization-wide initiatives and communications efforts, including: developing communications plans and campaigns that help advance strategic goals, driving digital and multimedia storytelling and designing key company-wide events and meetings, including but not limited to annual meetings and town halls.

Manage and oversee work of external writers, agencies and partners supporting strategic communication efforts, including but not limited to: digital content creation, creative logistics and production partners to ensure resulting deliverables and collaterals are of the highest standards.

Monitor, analyze, and report on the effectiveness of communication strategies and initiatives, using data to drive continuous improvement.

Lead within critical enterprise-wide and community forums relevant to work; Serve as a key communication and engagement advisor for the GNE organization and a steward of the culture

Stay current on latest communication and engagement trends, digital communication trends and company culture, integrating learnings and experimenting with new programs elements, formats, channels and approaches

Work fluidly across the ECE team and Corporate Communications department to support special projects as needed

Participate in business travel, by air or car, when required for regular internal and external business meetings.

Comply with all laws, regulations, and policies that govern the conduct of Genentech activities.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent

A minimum of 10 years of previous communications or public relations experience

Extensive experience in digital channels, internal publishing 

Extensive communications design experience and advanced presentation development skills.

High proficiency in Google Suite and Apple Products 

Proven ability to develop and implement internal and digital communication strategies in collaboration with a diverse team.

Proven ability to provide strategic communications counsel to senior leaders, orchestrating high-visibility executive presentations, and developing brand identity. 

Experience in engaging high-performance teams and developing innovative communication platforms.

Ability to design and implement innovative communication efforts that engage and inspire others at various levels in the organization.

Preferred Qualifications

An advanced degree

8 years of experience gained in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or related industry 

Experience with driving core business and corporate-level strategies and objectives, activities and communications, and execution is preferred.

Previous internal communications, corporate communications or communications agency experience and marketing experience is preferred.

Experience with collective leadership and stakeholder management, change communications and management, and the ability to approach work with adaptability and an enterprise mindset

Highly skilled at managing new, complex, large-scale, multi-cross-functional workstreams projects that may include both internal and external stakeholders

Highly skilled at managing programs and events at a portfolio level

Deep experience in writing,story-telling through different mediums and channels and editing, verbal communications and presentations

Adept at distilling complex and sometimes voluminous content into clear, concise and engaging communications and experiences

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of South San Francisco, California $167,300/yr to $310,700/yr.  Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.  A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance.  This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
