Internal Traveler - RN
GENERAL SUMMARY The CHKD Registered Nurse – Internal Traveler Program (RN-ITP) provides short-term 13-week assignments for eligible candidates to fill staffing needs. Internal Traveler -RNs will be eligible for up to 3 renewable 13-week assignments into critical specialty groups across the CHKDHS. The initial critical specialty groups are the Emergency Department (ED), Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), hematology/Oncology (HEM/ONC), Pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), Perioperative Services, Medical/Surgical, etc. The RN – Internal Traveler plans, provides, and monitors individualized nursing care in response to specific patient needs within a defined scope of practice as well as provides developmentally appropriate psychosocial and clinical care respective to the assigned patient population. Reports to department leadership. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES + Provides developmentally appropriate clinical and psychosocial care. + Plans, provides, and monitors specific patient needs following established policies, procedures, and regulations. + Provides general care and may be asked to assist in other intensive care units upon request + Communicates and collaborates effectively with all members of the healthcare team. + Educates patients and their families on care plans. + May be required to travel to varying work locations as needed. + Performs all other duties as assigned. LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS + Required Licenses and/or Certifications + Registered Nursing License in the State of Virginia or Registered Nurse holding a valid Compact State license required at time of hire. + Basic Life Support training (BLS) required at time of hire. + Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training required at time of hire + Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU): Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification required at time of hire. + Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification is required at time of hire, in accordance with departmental requirements and policies. + Departments include but are not limited to ED, PICU, Operating Room (OR), and Sedation and Respiratory care. + Preferred Licenses and/or Certifications + Critical Care Units: Advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) training preferred. MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS + Required Education and Experience + Associate degree in Nursing (ADN) from an accredited program, college, or university required and/or Diploma in Nursing from an accredited program required. + 2 or more years of relevant and recent clinical experience required. + 1 year or more years of pediatric experience required. + At time of hire, record of completion for all education, licenses, training and/or certifications is required. + Continuous re-certification and/or maintenance of licensures, certifications/designations, training, educational and application requirements is required during employment. + Preferred Education and Experience + Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited program, college, or university preferred. + Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities + Working knowledge within the scope of a registered nurse and other clinical providers. + Knowledge and understanding of professional nursing theory, practice and procedure needed for the appropriate application of the nursing process. + Skilled in assessing nursing needs of acute and chronically ill patients and their families. + Working knowledge of procedures and techniques involved in administering routine and special treatments to patients. + Working knowledge of infection control procedures and safety precautions. + Able to record activities, document assessments, plan of care, interventions, evaluation, and re-evaluation of patient status effectively. + Able to document and communicate pertinent information using computer and/or paper documentation tools in a clear and concise manner. + Successfully works independently and self-sufficiently seeks out resources in multidisciplinary group settings while collaborating with other staff members when necessary. + Capable of establishing and maintaining effective collegial relationships with diverse individuals. + Possesses strong verbal, written, and interpersonal skills needed to communicate information to patients, families, and staff members in accordance with the nursing plan of care. + Possess effective and proficient computer skills with experience in healthcare systems/programs. + Ability to learn software programs and computer skills at a fast pace. + Able to navigate the entity to provide clinical care for patients. + Highly motivated, enthusiastic team player who takes initiative. + Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy. + Excellent time management skills, able to shift priorities and problem solve in a fast paced, fluid healthcare environment. WORKING CONDITIONS Expected to work in a patient care environment with minimal exposure to environmental hazards such as, but not limited to, excessive noise, dust, or extremes in temperatures. Exposure to communicable diseases and moderately adverse working conditions due to the need to perform certain patient care activities can be expected.
