The Cellular Immunology and in vivo models lab is part of the Immunology Function in the Bacterial Scientific Area in Siena, GSK. The lab is involved mainly in: Characterization of immune response to vaccine candidates and pathogens, both in murine models and in human samples Development of functional assays to evaluate antibody functionality Development of in vivo model of infection to assess vaccine and monoclonal antibody efficacy Development of in vitro human in vitro models to assess and predict reactogenicity and immunogenicity The intern will be involved in the daily activities of the in vivo infection model team, supporting in the following activities: Growth and preparation of bacteria for infection Preparation and processing of organs to extract bacteria Bacteria plating and counting Measurement of antibodies and cytokines in sera and organs collected after infection Data analysis and interpretation. Data presentation. Basic histological protocols, fluorescent microscopy, cytometry are some technologies well advanced in the lab Non-technical: ability to follow standard operating procedures and to work with the team to ensure the maintenance of equipment and reagents in compliance with GSK and EHS requirements, development of problem-solving skills. What will you learn? GSK vaccines main goal is to develop innovative vaccines to protect people from serious disease. As part of GSK Bacterial Scientific Area, the laboratory of Cellular Immunology and in vivo models is focused on the characterization of the immune response to pathogens and vaccine candidate, both at preclinical and early clinical stages. The intern will be part of a highly diversified and multi-disciplinary team, including senior scientist and scientist as well as PhD and post-doc student, contributing not only to project support but also to scientific innovation. Within this scientific environment the intern will acquire knowledge of various microbiological and immunological protocols, will learn how to analyze and interpret results combining protection and immune readouts.
