I. Position Summary:
The interpreter provides language interpretation services between non–English speaking patients/families and the hospital's care providers. The interpreter acts as cultural broker explaining cultural needs/ differences to providers and educates patients regarding hospital services. The interpreter also helps with translation of documentation for medical purposes when possible.
II. Major Responsibilities:
Facilitates effective and accurate verbal communication between the non-English speaking patients, their families and Health Alliance staff.
Utilizes knowledge of target language, English language and medical terminology to effectively communicate verbally with patients, patient family members and Health Alliance staff.
May translate spoken and written statements, policies and messages from English into another language at a professional level.
Assesses understanding of those individuals receiving interpretation of medical information and offers clarification if needed.
Uses a high level of grammatical sentence structure, follows all language rules, in both languages, while at the same time keeping a level of understandability or readability appropriate for the target audience.
Explains medical information and procedures to patients and families or caregivers.
Explains cultural differences or practices to health care providers and patients when appropriate and communicates any patient special needs to providers. Uses culturally appropriate and professional behavior when providing interpretation services.
Takes call on weekends, nights or holidays as needed and provides office management support including data entry.
Accurately completes encounter forms for each face-to-face interpretation, consultation phone call or patient phone call.
Attends variety of meetings, conferences and seminars as required or directed in order to maintain/renew the National Certification.
Meets established productivity standards.
Facilitates and promotes the sharing of knowledge and content throughout departments.
Takes responsibility for ensuring that all work outcomes satisfy the UMass Memorial Health System True North.

Practices cost containment and fiscal responsibility through the efficient use of supplies, equipment, time, etc.
Complies with established departmental policies, procedures and objectives.
Attends variety of meetings, conferences, seminars as required or directed.
Demonstrates use of Quality Improvement in daily operations.
Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements.
Respects diverse views and approaches, and contributes in maintaining an environment of professionalism, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients and visitors.
Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.
All responsibilities are essential job functions.
III. Position Qualifications:
Must pass medical terminology and translation test prior to date of hire. Driver’s license and transportation required to reach off-site locations.
JOB KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Proficiency in English and interpreting language. Fluent oral and written English and interpreting language required. Must have the ability to work independently, have good organizational skills, and have sensitivity to bilingual/bicultural issues, strong interpersonal communication skills necessary to interact with very sick patients, their families, and HealthAlliance staff under stressful/emergency situations that may arise while performing duties. Excellent customer and patient relations skills, and have basic computer knowledge. Must be flexible and willing to take call nights, weekends or holidays when needed.
EDUCATION:
Completion of a recognized and approved Medical Interpreter Training required. (60 hours minimum)
Associates Degree desired.
Certification through the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters or the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters – CCHI preferred
EXPERIENCE:
Prior experience as a medical interpreter preferred.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, ETC. :
National Certification for medical interpreters preferred
International Medical Interpreters Association (IMIA) membership recommended
