+ Supervising interpreter staff. Interviewing, hiring, training and developing staff. Organizing work, assigning Interpreters to meet patient/family needs. Meeting with staff regularly to review work assignments, procedures, schedules. Conducting regular staff meetings. May serve as a point person in the manager’s absence.
+ Planning, organizing, and overseeing daily operation of assigned language interpreters, including arrival and departures, triage issues, scheduling of weekly coverage, triage rotations, and absences. Ensuring proper coverage for all areas to meet established schedules and clinical requirements. Overseeing assigned language interpreter staff in its response to interpreter requests and resolving problems as needed. Ensuring that courtesy translations are assigned to staff language interpreters with the required translations skill sets, are completed in a skillful and timely manner.
+ Participating in selection process, recommending hires to the Interpreter Services Manager. Assessing regular and per diem interpreter staff. Training, supervising, and evaluating assigned language staff, per diem, associated personnel, and intern interpreters. Monitoring work performance, providing guidance and feedback, and initiating disciplinary and other personnel actions as warranted. Developing and providing in-service and other continuing education programs for staff development.
+ Monitoring and ensuring compliance with hospital, departmental and external policies, and regulations. Overseeing and ensuring completion of collection of statistics, quality monitoring, and related data collection for assigned language interpreters.
+ Conducting annual performance reviews of interpreters and recommending merit increases in conjunction with manager. Initiating peer reviews, obtaining provider feedback. Keeping manager informed of feedback on staff performance.
+ Interpreting for patients and families with limited or no English language proficiency in their interactions with care providers and other hospital personnel. Translating complex and/or sensitive medical and personal information, including diagnostic, surgical procedures, and treatment plans. Proofreading and checking translated documents for accuracy. Assisting patients in scheduling appointments, resolving billing problems, and other related matters. Identifying, assessing, and facilitating understanding of cultural differences impacting communication.
+ Providing education and training on Medical Interpreting Ethics and Standards of Practice to regular and per diem interpreter staff and associated personnel.
+ Providing education and training to hospital staff on subjects, such as working effectively with an interpreter and cross-cultural communication.
To qualify, you must have:
+ A minimum of three years of experience in medical interpreting.
+ Prior experience as a Coordinator or Medical interpreter at BCH is preferred.
+ An Associate’s level degree or higher is strongly preferred.
+ National Certification for Medical Interpreters is required within six months of employment.
+ The analytical skills to resolve problems that require the use of basic scientific, mathematical, or technical principles.
+ Strong communication skills in order to effectively deal with conflicting views or issues and mediate fair solutions, or well developed writing skills.
+ Written and verbal fluency in both English and the language of specific population(s) served.
